Week 5: Saturday's report

Patrick Corbin pitches for Lawyers, Guns &
Money. Corbin Bernsen played a
lawyer on "L.A. Law." Coincidence?

STUDS: Patrick Corbin (Lawyers, Guns & Money) improved to 4-0, struck out 7, allowed one run in 7 innings, and scored a run. Alfonso Soriano (Rookies) hit a pair of 2-run homers.

DUDS: Brandon League (Fresh Fish) served up a solo homer and took the loss while striking out 1 in 1.1 innings. Everth Cabrera (Rookies) went 0 for 4 with 2 strikeouts and committed an error. Phillies hitters other than Freddy Galvis, who had Philadelphia's only hit, combined to go 0 for 25.

NOTE: The Mets-Braves game was rained out. No makeup date has been announced.

Week 5: Friday's report

Buster Posey's big day was bittersweet for the
Dodgers fans in charge of Manwaring a Muumuu.
STUDS: Matt Holliday (Arbitration Losers) hit a 2-run homer, singled twice and scored 3 runs. A.J. Burnett (Going Going Gonzo) struck out 9 and allowed 1 run in a 7-inning victory. Buster Posey (Manwaring a Muumuu) doubled home the Giants' first run and hit a walkoff solo homer to beat the hated Dodgers. Sergio Romo (Testosteraun Braun) struck out 2 in a scoreless inning and earned the victory.

DUDS: Aroldis Chapman (Arbitration Losers) struggled in a non-save opportunity, allowing 4 hits, 2 walks and 3 runs while striking out 1 in 0.2 inning. Ryan Zimmerman (Lawyers, Guns & Money) went 0 for 4 with 4 strikeouts in his return to the lineup.

TRANSACTIONS: Plenty of moves to catch up on, including one I missed earlier in the week.

• Rookies place OF Jason Heyward on the disabled list and acquire OF Reed Johnson, who takes Heyward's place in the lineup.

• Lawyers, Guns & Money activate 3B Ryan Zimmerman and put him in the lineup in place of Placido Polanco, who was given his unconditional release.

• Manwaring a Muumuu activates 3B Aramis Ramirez and places him in the lineup. SP Josh Beckett is released to make room on the roster for Ramirez. 2B Mark Ellis can be moved to the bench because he has missed three consecutive games this week because of injury, so 3B/2B Jedd Gyorko shifts to second base. Manwaring a Muumuu had used conditional DL moves on Ellis and OF Carl Crawford, but those are rendered moot by the Ramirez move and Crawford's Friday appearance, respectively.

multipositional flexibility to Manwaring a Muumuu.

STUDS: Jordan Zimmermann (Testosteraun Braun) picked up win No. 5, struck out 8 in 8 shutout innings, and singled. TRANSACTIONS: Fresh Fish on Tuesday acquired free agent OF Delmon Young and put him in the lineup in place of OF Giancarlo Stanton, who was placed on the disabled list. Lawyers, Guns & Money acquired free agent 1B/3B Yuniesky Betancourt and placed 1B Matt Adams on the DL. Manwaring a Muumuu acquired restricted free agent OF/1B Michael Cuddyer, who was on the Silver State Sagebrushers' bench for four consecutive weeks. Week 5: Tuesday's report

Tim Hudson doubled and homered while
picking up his 200th career win. He struck out
6 in 7 innings. That would have been worth
24 points in FBLG — if he hadn't been on the
bench for Lawyers, Guns & Money.

STUDS: Rickie Weeks (Silver State Sagebrushers) homered, doubled and singled; scored 3 runs; and drove in 5. Carlos Quentin (Lawyers, Guns & Money) doubled twice, homered, scored 3 runs and drove in 3. Hyun-jin Ryu (Lawyers, Guns & Money) singled, drove in a run, pitched 6 innings in a win, allowed 2 runs and struck out 12. Nick Hundley (Pitch You Blockhead) hit a 3-run homer and singled twice. Starling Marte (Pitch You Blockhead) homered, doubled, singled and drove in 3 runs.

DUDS: Jorge De La Rosa (Silver State Sagebrushers) allowed 6 runs and struck out only 1 in a 4-inning loss. J.J. Putz (Silver State Sagebrushers) blew a save and took the loss. Roy Halladay (Misfits) allowed 8 runs and struck out 3 in a 3.2-inning loss. Edwin Jackson (Pitch You Blockhead) fell to 0-4 while allowing 8 runs and striking out 6 in 4.2 innings; he also committed an error.

The Check Swing: Week 4

1. Manwaring a Muumuu (709 points, 3-1): The Muumuu crew rides a strong offensive week into first place despite a mediocre pitching performance, and the offense could be even better moving forward with the return of Jason Kubel and Aramis Ramirez. Buster Posey, Joey Votto and Huston Street are performing better, as well.

2. Misfits (704 points, 3-1): Roy Halladay, Adam Wainwright and Jaime Garcia look like they'll anchor this rotation, and the return of Freddie Freeman and Carlos Ruiz will strengthen a good offense. But how serious is Troy Tulowitzki's shoulder injury?

3. Testosteraun Braun (669 points, 2-2): Daniel Murphy certainly cooled off, which contributed to a blowout loss for the Syringe Squad. There's still no answer to the Goldschmidt-Rizzo situation at first base, and we wonder what will happen to Evan Gattis when Brian McCann returns to the Braves.

Manwaring a Muumuu moves into first place
and takes a break to wash his fat-guy hat.
4. Arbitration Losers (668 points, 2-2): Tony Cingrani looks like a gem in the rotation, and Matt Kemp seems to have found his stroke. Chase Headley and Brandon Crawford form a great left side of the infield. But where did Allen Craig's home run power go?

5. Silver State Sagebrushers (662 points, 1-3): The Sagebrushers picked up their first win thanks to big point totals from Clayton Kershaw, Justin Upton and Dexter Fowler. On the other hand, Rickie Weeks is struggling again, and there are cracks in the rotation.

6. Going Going Gonzo (630 points, 1-3): It's a bad sign for the Gonzos when Ruben Tejada has outscored Dan Uggla and B.J. Upton this season. The rotation looks like a strength, though, with A.J. Burnett continuing last season's success and Trevor Cahill pitching well.

7. Pitch You Blockhead (617 points, 2-2): The outfield of Carlos Gonzlez, Shin-Soo Choo and Starling Marte has combined for 214 of PYB's 617 points this season. This team will need to get more from the struggling middle infield of Cliff Pennington, Josh Rutledge and Matt Carpenter to close the gap with the leaders.

8. Lawyers, Guns & Money (613 points, 3-1): LGM came awfully close to being our league's only 4-0 team. But great performances by Lance Lynn, Patrick Corbin and Ian Desmond weren't enough to make up for a bad week from Yadier Molina (6 points) and Andrew McCutchen (3 points). Also, the infield right side of Ike Davis and Danny Espinosa hasn't done much.

9. Fresh Fish (606 points, 2-2): Giancarlo Stanton has 3 homers in the past 2 days, which bodes well for a move up the standings. The return of Cody Ross from the DL has helped, but the Fish could really use Ryan Ludwick and Zack Greinke back, too. Jean Segura has been good in place of Hanley Ramirez, who is scheduled to return this week. Is there a shortstop controversy in Fishtown?

10. Rookies (512 points, 1-3): With Jason Heyward out after having an appendectomy, things don't look good for the Rookies. Alfonso Soriano posted 6 games with zero points this week. In fact, the Rookies got a total of 17 points from Marco Scutaro, Everth Cabrera, John Buck, David Freese, Paul Maholm, Soriano and Heyward.

Week 4: Sunday's report

Giancarlo Stanton's power surge is good news for the
Miami Marlins and for the Fresh Fish.
STUDS: Tony Cingrani (Arbitration Losers) singled, scored a run and struck out 11 in 6 shutout innings. Clayton Kershaw (Silver State Sagebrushers) struck out 12 in 8 shutout innings. Giancarlo Stanton (Fresh Fish) homered twice, singled and drove in 4 runs. Carl Crawford (Manwaring a Muumuu) hit two solo homers.

DUDS: John Buck (Rookies) went 0 for 4 with 2 strikeouts and dropped a popup for an error. Ross Detwiler (Manwaring a Muumuu) allowed 3 earned runs on 11 hits while striking out 3 batters in 5 innings in a loss.

CORRECTION: A scoring error contributed to a note Saturday about Testosteraun Braun's 10 players combining for zero points. They actually combined for 2. The FBLG blog regrets the error.
