Week 2: Friday's Roundup

Andrew Cashner scored from third on a ground ball
to the shortstop. Oh, he also threw his second
1-hitter in his past 5 starts.
Studs: Andrew Cashner (DZ) dominated the Tigers, striking out a career-high 11 and throwing a 1-hit shutout. He also singled and scored. Madison Bumgarner (Misfits) had a grand slam and a sacrifice fly, which would be enough to warrant an appearance on the Studs list by itself. He also struck out 7 and allowed 4 runs in a 6-inning win. Hyun-jin Ryu (FF) struck out 8 and got the win in 7 shutout innings. Adrian Gonzalez (DZ) homered, singled twice and drove in 5. Hanley Ramirez (PYB) had 2 doubles and a single, drove in a run and scored 3. Justin Upton (Rookies) homered, singled twice, scored twice and drove in 2.

Duds: Trevor Rosenthal (PYB) served up a 3-run homer and took the loss. B.J. Upton (Rookies) went 0 for 4 and was caught stealing. Kolten Wong (Rookies) went 1 for 6 with an error. Jose Fernandez (DZ) allowed 6 runs and struck out 6 in a 4-inning loss. Dan Uggla (FF) scored a run and made an error. Matt Holliday (AL) went 0 for 3 with an error.

Week 2: Thursday's Roundup

As good as Stephen Strasburg's outing was, his hosiery
was even better.
Studs: Stephen Strasburg (DZ) got the win and struck out 12 while allowing 1 run in 6.2 innings. Daniel Murphy (Misfits) had a double, 2 singles, 3 RBIs, 2 runs and a steal. Justin Upton (Rookies) had a 2-run homer, a solo homer and a single. Gerrit Cole (AL) struck out 10 in a 6-inning win while allowing 3 runs and committing an error. Jayson Werth (FF) had a 2-run homer, a single, 2 runs and a steal.

Duds: Cody Asche (Rookies) went 0 for 4 with 3 Ks and an error. Pablo Sandoval (AL) went 0 for 3 and scored a run, but he made a Zimmerman-like throwing error.

Tanana in the Tailpipe 88, Danger Zaun 85
Ryan's Rangers 123, Pitch You Blockhead 62

Week 2: Wednesday's Roundup

Hey, Pirates! Get somebody on base for these two guys!
Studs: Ervin Santana (Rookies bench) got the win and struck out 6 in 8 shutout innings. Mike Leake (FF) got the win and stuck out 3 in 8 shutout innings. Jayson Werth (FF) had a grand slam and an RBI groundout. Jason Heyward (Rookies) had a homer, 2 singles, 2 runs and 2 RBIs. Anthony Rizzo (RMH) had 2 doubles, 2 singles, 2 runs and an RBI. Pedro Alvarez and Russell Martin (RMH) hit two solo homers apiece. Carlos Gomez (RR) was a triple short of the cycle and scored twice. Christian Yelich (Tanana) had a double, 2 singles, a steal an RBI and 3 runs. Billy Hamilton (DZ bench) went berserk with a triple, 2 singles, 2 steals and 2 runs. Gerardo Parra (Tanana bench) was a triple shy of the cycle, drove in 2 and scored 3 times.

Duds: Maybe Adam should change his team name to E-3/E-4/E-6. Ryan Howard, Scooter Gennett and Jimmy Rollins (E-3) each made an error and combined for a minus-4. Jhonny Peralta (FF) went 0 for 2 with an error. Jordan Zimmermann (Rookies) allowed 5 runs and struck out 1 in 1.2 innings. Kenley Jansen (RMH) allowed the game-losing homer and struck out 1 in 0.2 inning. Tim Lincecum (RMH) struck out 5 and allowed 7 runs in a 4-inning loss.

Yadier Molina (AL) was a triple short of the cycle and scored twice.

Scores

Arbitration Losers 60, Rookies 28
Fresh Fish 34, Misfits 31

Week 2: Monday's Roundup

Free agent Jordan Lyles' outing would have been worth
21 points in FBLG, but only 15 of them came from his
pitching. He had two singles, a double and an RBI.
Studs: Troy Tulowitzki (RMH) was a triple shy of the cycle and scored 2 runs. Michael Wacha (Misfits) struck out 3 and allowed 1 run in a 6-inning win.

Duds: Charlie Blackmon scored about a zillion points last week as a free agent, but he opened his stint as a Misfit by going 0 for 4 with a sacrifice fly. Terrible. Joey Votto (Misfits) went 0 for 3 with an error.

Notes: The Brewers-Phillies game was pushed back a day because of rain. The Padres-Indians game was postponed because of rain and will be made up as part of a Wednesday doubleheader.

Scores

Arbitration Losers 14, Rookies 2
Misfits 15, Fresh Fish 0
Danger Zaun 3, Tanana in the Tailpipe 2

Week 1: The Check Swing

Welcome to the return of The Check Swing, our review of the week in FBLG. It's like the old show "This Week in Baseball," except there's no video, no cool 1980s graphics and no Mel Allen voiceovers. This week's edition is "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly."

1. Fresh Fish (221 points, 1-0): Good — Giancarlo Stanton scored 36 points with a monster week for the Marlins; Yovani Gallardo pitched like an ace in two outings. Bad — Ryan Zimmerman's ability to throw the ball across the diamond is in doubt again. Ugly — Clayton Kershaw is on the disabled list, and his return date is unknown.

2. Pitch You Blockhead (216 points, 1-0): Good — Zack Greinke and Hanley Ramirez combined for 51 points to lead the way. Bad — The Cardinals' slow start means few save opportunities for Trevor Rosenthal. Ugly — Amid a terrible start for the San Diego offense, Will Venable scored only 5 points this week.

3. Arbitration Losers (201 points, 1-0): Good — Wade Miley scored 31 points and Michael Cuddyer had 30 to lead the defending playoff champs to a win against the defending regular-season champs. Bad — Cliff Lee got hammered by Texas in the opener but recovered against the Cubs. Ugly — Jedd Gyorko's 2-point week was disappointing.

4. Danger Zaun (194 points, 0-1): Jose Fernandez posted 40 points in two starts and looks like a Cy Young candidate. Bad — Jim Henderson lost his job as Milwaukee's closer before the season started and looked terrible in a 1-point week in middle relief. Ugly — Billy Hamilton did absolutely nothing and managed to get hurt in the process. Nice minus-1 there, Billy.

5. Ryan's Rangers (186 points, 1-0): Good — We're sure Bill expected to get 40 points from Angel Pagan and Anthony Rendon in the opening week. Right, Bill? Bad — Starting catcher Wilson Ramos got hurt, and backup catcher Devin Mesoraco is still hurt. Get Jeff Mathis' agent on the phone! Ugly — Ryan Braun's thumb is still causing him problems. Will Bill get burned by Braun two years in a row?

6. Rocky Mountain High (185 points, 1-0): Good — Carlos Gonzalez scored 32 points. That could be a weekly occurrence as long as he's healthy. Bad — Pedro Alvarez scored 11 points with days of 0, -1, 0, 11, 0 and 1. Ugly — Yasiel Puig started the week injured, then got benched for showing up late, then got hurt. We hope Jon is ready for adventure.

7. Tanana in the Tailpipe (168 points, 0-1): Good — Mark Trumbo has 5 homers and scored 29 points for the Tailpipers. Bad — Starlin Castro's rebound season isn't looking like much of one yet, as the shortstop scored only 5 points. Ugly — Homer Bailey, Bryce Harper and Travis d'Arnaud each scored 1 point, and the d'Arnaud experiment might not last long for Matt. Get Jeff Mathis' agent on the phone!

8. E-3 (160 points, 0-1): Good — Craig Kimbrel was his usual self, and Johnny Cueto looks like he'll be an ace if he stays healthy. And Ryan Howard wasn't terrible! Bad — The vaunted outfield of Andrew McCutchen, Allen Craig and Curtis Granderson is off to a sluggish start. Ugly — With 6 points this week and 3 errors on the season, Miguel Montero is looking a lot like last year's version. Get Jeff Mathis' agent on the phone!

9. Misfits (153 points, 0-1): Good — Matt Kemp is showing a power stroke, and the Bumgarner-Wacha rotation duo looks like it'll be one of the best in FBLG. Bad — High picks Joey Votto and Hunter Pence combined for only 24 points. Ugly — Daniel Murphy missed time because his wife was having a baby, and he returned to make 3 errors and post a minus-1. That's called a "Billy Hamilton."

10. Rookies (115 points, 0-1): Good — Paul Goldschmidt did his usual thing, powering his way to a 24-point week. Bad — With Ervin Santana being held back and no opening-day pitchers on the roster, Henry got only 3 starts this week. Ugly — The all-Braves outfield combined for a paltry 19 points, and catcher Evan Gattis added only 3.

Week 1: Sunday's Roundup

Matt Kemp homered twice against the Giants. Something
tells me he's likely to be in the Misfits' lineup next week.
Studs: Hanley Ramirez (PYB) hit 2 solo homers, doubled and scored 3 runs. Zack Greinke (PYB) doubled, got the win and struck out 8 while allowing 2 runs in 6 innings. Wade Miley (AL) singled 3 times, scored a run and struck out 2 while allowing only 2 runs in 8 innings in Colorado.

Duds: Matt Cain (E-3) singled and struck out 3 in 6 innings, but he allowed 3 homers and 5 runs and took the loss. A.J. Burnett (E-3) struck out 3 in 5.2 innings but walked 6 and allowed 8 runs — 4 of them earned — in a loss to the Cubs. Miguel Montero (E-3) singled and made his third error. Nolan Arenado (RR) drove in a run but made an error.

Final scores

Fresh Fish 185, E-3 162

Pitch You Blockhead 212, Tanana in the Tailpipe 160
