If I were to tell you that a Marlin is third in the NL in batting average, you'd have probably figured Christian Yelich or Dee Gordon. |
Six weeks into the season and we're still seeing plenty of movement in the rankings. Will things ever settle down? Either way, now is a good time to check out unsung heroes for the early portion of the FBLG slate.
1. Hundley Eyes (1,158 points, 4-2, last week 3): A 48-point week from Jose Fernandez led the commishes to a 221-point outburst. It would have been an even better week if they had played double-start Rubby De La Rosa (32 points) instead of Patrick Corbin (7) or Kenta Maeda (1). Whoops. Unsung: Welington Castillo was one of the last catchers drafted, but he's only 3 points behind Buster Posey.
2. Fresh Fish (1,145 points, 5-1, last week 1): The Kershaw-Cueto-Hammel trio struck again for Rick, posting 66 points in only 3 appearances. Matt Holliday finally broke out with a 24-point week that included a pair of double-digit days. Unsung: Raise your hand if you thought Martin Prado would be hitting .374 in mid-May. Anyone?
3. Rookies (1,075 points, 3-3, last week 4): As usual, Henry's pitching led the way — Jake Arrieta, Stephen Strasburg and Jaime Garcia combined for 70 of the team's 168 points. Jonathan Villar (16) was the Rookies' leading scorer in a 10-point win. Unsung: We keep underestimating an aging Brandon Phillips on a mediocre Reds team, but the man keeps producing.
4. Pitch You Blockhead (1,074 points, 4-2, last week 2): Scott's team looked strong heading into a high-profile duel with Hundley Eyes, but the Blockheads failed to show up. Jacob deGrom and Jean Segua (18 each) were the top producers in the 88-point loss, and Brad Ziegler bombed (-2). Unsung: Mid-round selection Jimmy Nelson, the Brewers' ace by default, is PYB's fourth-leading scorer.
5. Lawyers, Guns & Money (1,063 points, 4-2, last week 5): A balanced effort, with only Justin Bour and Adam Conley in single digits, helped the Fightin' Zevons drub the Arbitration Losers in a battle of Giants fans. Addison Russell posted a 26 to pace the scoring. Unsung: With 90 points, Aaron Nola is right there with fantasy monsters Buster Posey (87), Giancarlo Stanton (91) and Carlos Gonzalez (94).
6. Misfits (1,023 points, 3-3, last week 7): This is another team that got a lift from outstanding pitching. Max Scherzer (32), Scott Kazmir (27) and Jon Lester (24) did most of the damage — which was good because the offense sputtered in the win against Goldschmidt Happens. Unsung: Brandon Belt isn't grabbing headlines, but he's one of the Misfits' leading scorers and a steady option at first base.

The Lumbar Yard's Ben Revere, who scored -1 point in 6 games, is FBLG's Dud of the Week. |
7. The Lumbar Yard (1,004 points, 2-4, last week 8): Melvin Upton Jr. (26) was the Yard's leading scorer, which probably explains the loss this week. The pitching was the problem once again, with Joe Ross (6), Adam Wainwright (7) and Tanner Roark (0) providing inconsistent performances. Unsung: After years of fantasy irrelevance (and real-life irrelevance), it's good to see Upton back on track.
8. Arbitration Losers (992 points, 2-4, last week 6): We're not accustomed to seeing the Losers scoring in the 130s or this low in the rankings. How bad has it gotten? Zack Greinke is being outscored by teammates Gio Gonzalez, D.J. LeMahieu and Jay Bruce. Unsung: Team owners seemed to shy away from Yadier Molina in the draft, but he's been healthy and productive while playing almost every day.
9. Retire 21 (991 points, 1-5, last week 9): Ray's team posted a 179 this week, but he happened to be facing the powerhouse Fresh Fish and was handed another loss. Pirates Francisco Liriano (2), Josh Harrison (5) and Jordy Mercer (3) could have done more to help this Bucs fan. Unsung: Apparently, this year the role of Andrew McCutchen will be played by Dexter Fowler.
10. Goldschmidt Happens (910 points, 2-4, last week 10): Four of Bill's players (Paul Goldschmidt, Gerrit Cole, Charlie Blackmon and Gerardo Parra) combined for 80 points, which means the rest of the crew scored only 61. Thanks a lot, Javier Baez (-1). Unsung: Vincent Velasquez, who didn't even start the season on the roster, is tied with Goldschmidt as the team's second-leading scorer.
