Week 11: Friday's Roundup

FBLG historical records are spotty, but our data show
that Josh Bell is the first Pittsburgh first baseman
to made the Studs list since Willie Stargell.
Studs: Max Scherzer (R) dominated the LOLMets, striking out 10 and allowing 1 run in an 8-inning victory. Charlie Blackmon (BM) tripled, doubled, scored twice and drove in a run. Josh Bell (M) homered, tripled, drove in 3 and scored twice. D.J. LeMahieu (AL) went 4 for 4 with a double, 2 runs, 2 RBIs, a walk and a steal. Carlos Martinez (AL) struck out 8 and allowed 1 run in a 6-inning win.

Duds: Yoenis Cespedes (Q) proved that you can't spell "Cespedes" without a couple of E's; he went hitless and committed 2 errors. Corey Seager (Q) walked and was caught stealing. Freddy Galvis (BM) went hitless and committed an error. Jeff Samardzija (PYB) allowed 8 runs and fanned 4 in a 6-inning loss.

Week 11: Thursday's Roundup

"Arenado is the product of Coors Field. He'd be an average hitter for any other team."
— a made-up quote from every lousy sportswriter who has a Hall of Fame vote and never made it past T-ball
Studs: Gio Gonzalez (BM) struck out 5 and allowed 2 runs in a 7-inning win. Charlie Blackmon (BM) tripled, singled, scored 3 runs and walked twice. Daniel Murphy (FF) tripled, singled twice, drove in 2 and scored. Nolan Arenado (PYB) cracked 3 doubles, drove in 4 and scored twice. D.J. LeMahieu (AL) singled 4 times, drove in 2 and scored 3 runs. He wasn't perfect, though — he was caught stealing. Brandon Crawford (AL) was a triple short of a cycle and drove in 3.

Duds: Rich Hill (PM) allowed 7 runs and fanned 4 in a 4-inning loss. Seung-Hwan Oh (M) struck out 1 in 1 inning but allowed 2 runs and took the loss.

Week 11: Wednesday's Roundup

How dumb are Marlins fans? How many times does it have to say "home run" before they get it?
Studs: Chris Taylor (BM) singled and doubled, scored a run, stole 2 bases and drove in 2. Brandon Phillips (PYB) had 2 doubles, 2 singles, 3 runs and 3 RBIs, throwing in an error for good measure. Eric Thames (PYB) homered, doubled and drove in 3. Marcell Ozuna (LGM) homered, doubled and drove in 3.

Duds: Tanner Roark (AL) allowed 7 runs and took the loss, striking out 5 in 5 innings. Josh Bell (M) walked and made an error. Kris Bryant (PM) went 0-fer with an error.

Week 11: Monday's Roundup

Many of our captions are jokey or sarcastic, but not this one:
Way to go, Jameson.
Studs: Jameson Taillon (CB) was the feel-good story of the day, striking out 5 in 5 shutout innings to win in his return from cancer treatment. Trea Turner (Q) homered, singled twice, scored twice and drove in 2. Jay Bruce (AL) was a triple shy of the cycle and drove in 2. Jacob deGrom (PYB) allowed 1 run and struck out 6 in a complete game win. Michael Taylor (M) had 2 doubles, a single, 2 runs and an RBI. Austin Hedges (FF) had 2 singles, a double, a run and 3 RBIs. Matt Adams (CB) homered twice, singled, walked, scored 3 runs and drove in 4.

Duds: Mike Foltynewicz (Q) managed to score -4.7 without taking the loss, which is damn impressive. He allowed 8 runs on approximately 58 hits and struck out no one in 3.1 innings. John Lackey (LGM) and his big stupid horse face took the loss, allowing 4 runs and striking out 1 in 5 innings.

Week 10: The Check Swing

Robbie Ray is striking out 11.7 batters per 9 innings and allowing 5.8 hits per 9. That's just absurd.
1. Clemente’s Bucs (1845.2 points, 7-3, last week, 2): Ray didn't have anyone put up a monster week, but most of his players were strong performers. Our favorite Southern gentleman, Dansby Swanson, led the way with 25 points, and 4 other hitters scored 20 or more points to overcome the loss of Justin Bour. Ivan Nova (22) guided a pitching staff that posted 78.3 points as the Bucs scored 219.3 points to beat The Rookies.

2. Bodysuit Man (1813.3 points, 7-3, last week 1): It was an odd week for Adam, who fell from the top spot in the rankings despite scoring 177.3 points in a loss to PYB. Charlie Blackmon (33.5), Matt Carpenter (20.5), Aaron Altherr (18.5), Chase Anderson (26.7) and Gio Gonzalez (28) were great. Unfortunately, no one else did anything of note. Well, that's not entirely true. Gerrit Cole's outing (-0.3) was noteworthy for how terrible it was.

Mark Reynolds hitting .314 doesn't
make sense to us, either.
3. The Rookies (1782.2 points, 6-4, last week 4): Henry's team scored an impressive 208.8 points, but the matchup gods were unkind — Clemente's Bucs were the wrong opponent to face. Max Scherzer (38.3) was incredible, as usual, but Jon Lester (3) and Tony Watson (-1) underperformed. Eduardo Nunez (27.5) continued his strong fantasy campaign, and every Rookies hitter reached double figures.

4. Lawyers Guns and Money (1757.3 points, 8-2, last week 3): Matt's team dropped in the rankings but now has the best record in the league. Joey Votto (30) homered 4 times and somehow walked only twice. Marcell Ozuna (22.5) and Bryce Harper (19) remain rock-solid out there, and Corey Knebel (18.5) had a great showing in his first week as a FBLG contributor. Meanwhile, Jhoulys Chacin (16) surprised us all.

5. Pitch! You Blockhead (1728.7 points, 4-6, last week 5): Scott's pitching staff was phenomenal in a win against Bodysuit Man, scoring 95.7 points and picking up 4 wins. Robbie Ray was the true definition of a Stud, striking out 23 batters in 13.1 innings and allowing 1 run. That was good for 45.3 points. Imagine if Jacob deGrom (-5) had done anything. Mark Reynolds (31) did plenty of stuff, such as homering 3 times, doubling 3 times, walking 6 times and driving in 8 runs.

6. Project Mayhem (1676.7 points, 5-5, last week 6): The greatest hitter known to man, Ryan Zimmerman, posted a disappointing 7 points for Bill this week. Still, PM got a lot of nice outings from Aaron Nola (23), Antonio Senzatela (18.3) and Rich Hill (14) to beat The Misfits. Kris Bryant (21) and Ian Desmond (18) led the way offensively.

7. Arbitration Losers (1672.8 points, 6-4, last week 8): How did Tim's team pull this one out? Carlos Martinez (32.3) and 5 potent bats. Well played, Paul Goldschmidt (28.5), Buster Posey (25), Jay Bruce (24), Hernan Perez (22.5) and D.J. LeMahieu (20). You all helped make up for Ryan Braun not doing a damn thing for another week.
Despite his crazy eyes, Ryan Braun is our Dud
of the Week because he doesn't seem to actually
play baseball anymore.

8. Quirkin’ For a Livin’ (1644.8 points, 3-7, last week 9): The good news for the commissioners is that the pitching staff allowed only 1 earned run. The bad news is that they pitched only 19 innings and totaled 1 win in a loss to the Losers. The hitting was pretty darn good, with Corey Seager (28.5) and David Peralta (26.5) leading the charge as the Quirkers mashed 11 homers.

9. Fresh Fish (1642.8 points, 4-6, last week 7): Anthony Rizzo (26.5) finally showed up, and Edinson Volquez (20) showed his no-hitter the previous week was no fluke. The bad news for Rick is that the rest of his team was pretty lousy. Adam Wainwright and Dan Straily combined for 14.7 points in 4 starts, and Daniel Murphy's 7 singles led to just 8 points.

10. The Misfits (1343.2 points, 0-10, last week 10): Reid's team is bound to pick up a W one of these weeks, but it didn't happen in Week 10. The pitching staff went 0-3, and Stephen Piscotty (19) was the top performer on the team. To make matters worse, Giancarlo Stanton (16.5) got plunked on the wrist. Oy.

Week 10: Sunday's Roundup

Corey Seager's first career grand slam was his second game-winning hit in two days.
Studs: Cody Bellinger (Q) homered twice and drove in 3. Corey Seager (Q) hit a grand slam and a double. David Peralta (Q) homered, singled twice, scored 3 runs and drove in 2. Dexter Fowler (Q) homered, doubled and drove in 3. Buster Posey (AL) had a double, 2 singles, 2 runs and 4 RBIs. Paul Goldschmidt (AL) homered, doubled twice and drove in 4. Eduardo Nunez (R) had 2 doubles, a single, a steal and 3 runs. Ivan Nova (CB) struck out 4 in 6 shutout innings for the win. Robbie Ray (PYB) struck out 12 in 6.2 shutout innings for the win. Hunter Pence (FF) had 3 doubles, 3 runs and 2 RBIs.

Duds: Raisel Iglesias (PM) allowed 4 runs, blew the save and took the loss in 0.2 innings. He did strike out 2, though! Anthony Rendon (FF) singled and erred.

Week 10: Saturday's Roundup

Carlos Martinez threw his first career shutout Saturday. And he did it the right way.
Studs: Jay Bruce (AL) homered, singled, scored twice and drove in 3. Carlos Martinez (AL) threw a four-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts. JT Realmuto (CB) homered, doubled twice and drove in 3. Andrew McCutchen (CB) had a single, 2 doubles and 2 RBIs. Mark Reynolds (PYB) homered, doubled, singled twice and drove in 2. Marcell Ozuna (LGM) had 2 doubles, 2 runs and 2 RBIs.

Duds: Eduardo Nunez (R) walked, scored and erred. Zack Cozart (PYB) scored and erred. Asdrubal Cabrera (FF) singled, walked and made 2 errors.

Week 10: Friday's Roundup

Your lone pitching stud of the day was... Jhoulys Chacin?
Studs: Giancarlo Stanton (M) homered, doubled and drove in 3. Dee Gordon (CB) singled, doubled, scored twice, drove in a run, stole a base and was caught stealing. Aaron Altherr (BM) doubled twice, tripled and drove in a run. Jhoulys Chacin (LGM) struck out 6 and allowed 2 runs in a 7-inning win.

Duds: Trea Turner (Q) walked and made 2 errors. Willson Contreras (LGM) made an error.
