Week 11: Saturday's Roundup

Remember when Trevor Rosenthal was a
top-notch closer? Pepperidge Farm remembers.
Studs: Wil Myers (PYB) homered, doubled twice, drove in 3, scored twice and stole a base. J.T. Realmuto (R21) went 4 for 5 with a homer, a double and 3 RBIs. Zack Greinke (AL) allowed 1 run and struck out 6 in an 8-inning win. Justin Turner (M) hit a 3-run homer, singled and scored twice.

Duds: Brandon Belt (M) and Matt Adams (HE) each went 0 for 4 with an error. Wei-Yin Chen (GH) allowed 6 runs and struck out 1 in 2.1 innings. Trevor Rosenthal (HE) faced 3 batters, didn't retire any of them, was charged with 2 runs and took the loss.

Week 11: Friday's Roundup

Justin Turner's hair rounds the bases after his second homer of the game.
Studs: Jake Arrieta (R) improved to 11-1 by striking out 11 Pirates in 6 shutout innings. The guy might just be pretty good. Justin Turner (M) was the entire Los Angeles offense, homering twice and driving in the winning run with an RBI single in a 3-2 win. Daniel Murphy (LY) had a 2-run double, homered and scored twice. Paul Goldschmidt (GH) was a triple short of a cycle and scored twice. Jon Jay (PYB) doubled twice, scored twice and had an RBI single.

Duds: Jeremy Jeffress (GH) got 1 out, allowed 1 run and took 1 loss. It's nice to see the Phillies managed to replace their overpriced, error-prone, whiff-happy, homer-hitting first baseman with an underpriced, error-prone, whiff-happy, homer-hitting first baseman. Tommy Joseph (LGM) went 0 for 3 with a run and an error.

Week 11: Thursday's Roundup

Bartolo Colon chooses the cow he'll be eating for dinner (not pictured).
Studs: Bartolo Colon (FF) struck out 8 and allowed 2 earned runs in a 7.2-inning win, adding a double and a run for good measure. (Well, "run" might be a stretch. We'll call it a double and a waddle.) Jonathan Villar (Rookies) hit the game-winning 2-run homer and added a single, steal and a run. Trayce Thompson (LY) hit a 3-run homer and doubled. Matt Wisler (GH) struck out 5 and allowed 2 runs in a 6.2-inning win. Neil Walker (Misfits) homered, doubled and drove in 3. He now has 14 homers and 5 doubles this year because the world doesn't make any sense. Freddie Freeman (R21) continued his torrid stretch with a homer, 2 singles, 2 runs and 2 RBIs. He has 39 points this week through 4 games, and one of those was a 0.

Duds: Aaron Nola (LGM) was pounded by the Blue Jays, allowing 8 runs (6 earned) and striking out 5 in 3 innings. Yangervis Solarte (GH) was 0-for-5 with an error.

Transaction: Goldschmidt Happens place OF Gerardo Parra on DL retroactive to Wednesday, sign and activate Ryan Raburn.

Week 11: Wednesday's Roundup

Something finally went right for the Braves this year!
Studs: Freddie Freeman (R21) hit for the cycle and scored twice. That's a 21-point day for the Sons of Clemente; fitting, right? Noah Syndergaard (HE) struck out 11 and allowed 2 runs — 1 earned — in an 8.1-inning victory. Rick's dual aces did their usual thing: Johnny Cueto (FF) fanned 9 and allowed 1 run in a 7-inning win. Clayton Kershaw (FF) struck out 11 and allowed 2 runs in a 7.1-inning win. He did make an error, though. D.J. LeMahieu (AL) was a homer short of a cycle, scored twice and drove in 2.

Duds: Corey Seager (LY) went 0 for 4 with 3 Ks and an error. Trevor Rosenthal (HE) was a human gas can, striking out 1 but allowing 2 runs on 3 hits and a walk in 0.1 inning.

Transaction: Arbitration Losers place RP Jonathan Papelbon on the DL and sign Shawn Kelley.

Week 11: Tuesday's Roundup

Tens of fans showed up to watch Brandon Finnegan mow down the Braves in Atlanta.
Studs: Hector Rondon (Misfits) lost the battle but won the war, blowing a save by allowing an inherited runner to score, then notching the vulture win with a strikeout in 1.2 "scoreless" innings. Madison Bumgarner (AL) continued to roll, striking out 8 and allowing 2 earned runs in an 8-inning win. He also singled. Brandon Finnegan (Rookies) struck out 5 and allowed a run in a 6-inning win. Carlos Gonzalez (LGM) homered, doubled, singled twice and scored three runs. Special mention needs to be made for Buster Posey (LGM), who despite falling just short of stud standards did manage to both steal a base AND throw out a base-stealer. And hit four singles! Helluva day for Gerald Dempsey Posey.

Duds: Tommy Joseph (LGM) went 0-for-4 with an error.

Week 11: Monday's Roundup

Denard Span has been on a FBLG roster the whole season? Who knew?
Studs: Three players emerged from bench duty to put up nice days for their respective teams. Adeiny Hechavarria (FF) had a 3-run triple and an RBI double, and scored twice. Jerad Eickhoff (HE) got the win and struck out 5 in 6 scoreless innings in Toronto. Denard Span (HE) homered, singled twice and scored 3 runs. Beyond that, Max Scherzer (M) allowed 1 run and fanned 11 in a 7-inning win. Martin Prado (FF) homered, singled twice and drove in 3. Zack Greinke (AL) singled and allowed 2 runs while striking out 6 in a 7-inning win. Freddie Freeman (R21) was a triple short of a cycle, drove in 3 and scored twice.

Duds: Colin Rea (PYB) allowed 8 runs — 6 earned — and fanned 4 in a 2.2-inning loss. Dexter Fowler (R21) went 0 for 4 with 3 Ks and an error.

    Week 10: The Check Swing

Pretty good week for the second-best pitcher on the North Side.
    1. Fresh Fish (1,860 points, 7-3, last week 1): The Fish posted the lowest winning score of the week (156) and barely got past the Rookies. The recently stolen Jayson Werth led the offense with 25 points.

    2. Hundley Eyes (1,854 points, 5-5, last week 2): Two years ago, these guys finished the regular season second in points but missed the playoffs because of bad luck in head-to-head matchups. Will it happen again?

    3. Lawyers, Guns & Money (1,764 points, 6-4, last week 3): Just when it looked like the Fightin' Zevons were on a roll, they posted 142 points in a loss to the Misfits. Addison Russell and Derek Dietrich combined for only 7 points.

    4. Pitch You Blockhead (1,746 points, 5-5, last week 5): Christian Friedrich and Wil Myers combined for 58 points, but it wasn't enough for PYB in a loss to the Losers. Blame the rest of the pitching staff — no one else reached double figures.

    5. Rookies (1,737 points, 5-5, last week 4): Cameron Rupp, Eugenio Suarez and Jaime Garcia combined for only 6 points in a 14-point loss to the Fish. Would you believe Stephen Strasburg is only 8 points behind Jake Arrieta?

    6. Arbitration Losers (1,734 points, 5-5, last week 6): D.J. LeMahieu and Curtis Granderson combined for 50 points in the victory against PYB. AL put up 179 points with only 4 starts from its pitchers, so look out next week.

Trea Turner got sent to the minors and posted a 0
for the Fish, so he's our Dud of the Week.
    7. Misfits (1,676 points, 6-4, last week 7): The Misfits took down LGM thanks to a monster 47-point week from Jon Lester. On the other hand, the slumping Neil Walker (-3) was brutal, and Yasmani Grandal (4) is still doing nothing with the bat this year.

    8. Retire 21 (1,667 points, 4-6, last week 8): The Sons of Clemente bopped along to a 20-point win against Hundley Eyes, with everyone reaching double figures except Drew Pomeranz (5) and Santiago Casilla (3).

    9. The Lumbar Yard (1,636 points, 5-5, last week 9): Well, well, well. Look which team put up FBLG's biggest point total in Week 10. Tyler Chatwood and Robbie Ray combined for 57 points in the win against GH.

    10. Goldschmidt Happens (1,502 points, 2-8, last week 10): Gerrit Cole and Vincent Velasquez got hurt, but at least Paul Goldschmidt put up 27 points. Small victories, right?

    Week 10: Sunday's Roundup

Arizona pitchers haven't been very Studly this year, but Robbie Ray sure was today.
Studs: Robbie Ray (LY) singled twice and got the win while striking out 6 in 7.2 shutout innings. Anthony Rizzo (LY) doubled, drove in 3, singled twice and scored twice. Jon Lester (M) drove in a run and got the win while allowing an unearned run and striking out 7 in 7 innings. Matt Holliday (FF) homered, singled twice, drove in 2 and scored twice.

Duds: Dexter Fowler (R21) singled and erred. Jeanmar Gomez (PYB) allowed 2 runs in a 0.2-inning loss. Adam Conley (LGM) allowed 6 runs — 5 earned — and fanned 2 in a 5-inning loss. Jon Niese (R) gave up 8 runs and fanned 5 in a 5.1-inning loss.  J.T. Realmuto (R21), Cesar Hernandez (GH), Justin Turner (M) and Chris Carter (R) all went 0-fer with an error.
