Week 9: Friday's Roundup

If you want your rookie shortstop to grow, it's important to water him regularly.
Studs: Corey Seager (LY) hit 3 homers but scored only 12 points because the Dodgers couldn't get anyone on base for him. Drew Pomeranz (R21) got the win and struck out 8 in 7 shutout innings as the Rockies entered "road mode." Eugenio Suarez (R) homered, singled twice, drove in 2 and scored twice. John Lackey (LGM) got the win and fanned 9 in 6.2 shutout innings. Noah Syndergaard (HE) singled and struck out 9 while allowing 2 runs in a 7-inning win, but he also made an error.

Left: Dud. Right: Stud.
Duds: Jimmy Nelson (PYB) gave up 6 runs and whiffed only 1 in a 4-inning loss. Trevor Rosenthal (HE) threw 18 pitches, and only 6 found the strike zone. All 3 men he walked came around to score. Francisco Liriano (R21) got knocked around to the tune of 10 hits and 7 runs — 6 earned — with 2 Ks in a 3.1-inning loss. Yangervis Solarte (GH) went 0 for 3 with an error. Chris Owings (LY) went 0 for 2 with an error. Gio Gonzalez (AL) cut off his glorious mane. Tragic.

Transactions: Fresh Fish have placed OF Hunter Pence on the DL and replaced him with Matt Holliday. PYB places OF Yasiel Puig on the DL and replaces him with Domingo Santana. Hundley Eyes signs 1B Matt Adams in its quest to set the record for first basemen owned in a FBLG season (R. Zimmerman, B. Paulsen, L. Duda, M. Reynolds, Adams).

Week 9: Thursday's Roundup

Zack Greinke looked better — and pitched better — in a Dodgers uniform.
Studs: It was a pretty good day for the aces of Arbitration Losers. Madison Bumgarner hit a 2-run homer, got the win and struck out 11 in 7.2 shutout innings. Zack Greinke got the win and fanned 11 in 7 shutout innings. That's a combined 52 points. Coors Field helped Eugenio Suarez (R) break out of his slump. He homered twice, doubled, drove in 4 and scored 3 runs. Jay Bruce (AL) had an RBI triple and an RBI double, and scored. Kyle Hendricks (LGM) struck out 6 and allowed 2 runs in an 8-inning win. Jon Jay (PYB) went 5 for 6 with a double, 2 runs and 2 RBIs as the Padres scored 13 runs ... and lost.

Duds: Ender Inciarte (M) and Jean Segura (PYB) each went 0 for 4 with an error.

Week 9: Wednesday's Roundup

If you're an AL middle reliever who doubles and scores the winning run, you're getting your picture on the blog.
So HEY HEY HEY to you, Matt Albers.
Studs: Two team owners will be very happy with this list today. The Misfits had an awesome day behind Max Scherzer (8 innings, 11 Ks, 2 runs, win) and Jon Lester (9 innings, 10 Ks, 1 run, win). Not to be outdone, Pitch You Blockhead has three guys on this list: Wil Myers homered, doubled and drove in 3; Wilson Ramos homered and drove in 4; and Jacob deGrom struck out 10 and allowed 1 run in a 7-inning no-decision. That's it. That's your studs list. The rest of you owners ought to be ashamed.

Duds: Carlos Gonzalez just likes having his name in this blog, as he follows up two studly days with a single and an error.

Week 9: Tuesday's Roundup

Even though the Rockies had 5 Studs of their own, the day's top batting performer was Matt Carpenter, who posted a 15.
Normal studs: Jose Fernandez (HE) got the win and struck out 6 in 7 shutout innings. Matt Carpenter (R21) tripled twice, doubled, singled, scored 4 runs and drove in 2. Joe Ross (LY) struck out 5 and allowed 1 run in a 7-inning win. Corey Seager (LY) hit a 3-run homer, singled twice and scored twice. Jonathan Lucroy (FF) is making this a habit — he homered, doubled, drove in 2 and threw out a base-stealer.

Coors Field studs: D.J. LeMahieu (AL) went 4 for 4 with a homer, 2 doubles, 4 runs and 2 RBIs. Charlie Blackmon (GH) hit a grand slam and a solo homer. Gerardo Parra (GH) was a triple short of a cycle, drove in 2 and scored twice. Carlos Gonzalez (LGM) also was a triple short of a cycle and drove in 2. Nolan Arenado (PYB) hit a pair of 2-run homers and scored 3 times. Jay Bruce (AL) was a single short of a cycle and drove in 2.

Duds: James Shields (FF) allowed 10 runs and fanned 1 in a 2.2-inning loss. That's a -9 if you're scoring at home. Patrick Corbin (HE) allowed 7 runs and struck out 3 in a 3.1-inning loss. Miguel Montero (GH) went 0 for 3 with 2 errors. Asdrubal Cabrera (GH) and Freddy Galvis (R21) each went 0 for 4 with an error.

Week 9: Monday's Roundup

Adam Duvall's power plays well at Coors Field, apparently.
Studs: Matt Harvey (M) got the win and struck out 6 in 7 shutout innings. Gregory Polanco (M) hit a grand slam, doubled and scored twice. Daniel Murphy (LY) drove in 3 and was a triple short of a cycle. Carlos Martinez (LGM) got the win and fanned 8 in 8 shutout innings. What happens when Reds and Rockies pitchers unite for a game at Coors Field? You get 4 Stud hitters: Adam Duvall (LGM) hit a 2-run homer and a solo homer. Zack Cozart (PYB) homered, singled twice, drove in 2 and scored twice. Joey Votto (AL) homered, doubled and drove in 3. Carlos Gonzalez (LGM) hit a 2-run homer, doubled and scored twice.

    Week 8: The Check Swing

Is Jonathan Villar this year's Dee Gordon? And no, that isn't a steroid joke, Ryan Braun.
    1. Fresh Fish (1,570 points, 6-2, last week 2): Rick's Fish sure put a beatdown on the commissioners this week, posting a 253 to win by 95 points. Sure, the Fish got big points from double-start aces Clayton Kershaw (38) and Johnny Cueto (35), but the contributions came from throughout the lineup. Only the constantly imploding Jeurys Familia (6) failed to reach double digits, and Jonathan Lucroy (30) made 3 consecutive Studs list appearances to end the week.

    2. Hundley Eyes (1,507 points, 5-3, last week 1): What can you say? Welington Castillo (-1) was "rested" twice during the 6-game week, Noah Syndergaard (5) pitched well before being ejected, Rubby De La Rosa (0) was terrible before his arm fell off, and Mike Matheny continues to refuse to use Trevor Rosenthal (10) unless the Cardinals have a 9th-inning lead with 3 or fewer runs on an odd-numbered day with a full moon — yet complains about Rosenthal being rusty because of underuse.

    3. Lawyers, Guns & Money (1,395 points, 5-3, last week 6): Matt's team put up 224 points with Giancarlo Stanton, Carlos Gonzalez, Carlos Martinez and Derek Dietrich on the bench. Hmm. The eruption was good enough to move the Fightin' Zevons up 3 spots in the rankings. John Lackey (30), Buster Posey (28), Adam Duvall (24) and Chase Utley (24) led the assault.

    4. Pitch You Blockhead (1,393 points, 5-3, last week 3): Much like Hundley Eyes, Scott's team had a terrible week. It began with pitchers Colin Rea and Ross Stripling being sent down to Triple-A. Scott responded by picking up Matt Cain (2), who got hurt. New closer Jeanmar Gomez (4) pitched only once, and Michael Conforto (1), Wil Myers (6), Joe Panik (6) and Jean Segura (8) did nothing.

    5. Rookies (1,384 points, 4-4, last week 4): Henry's team wasn't great but did enough to dispatch PYB. Stephen Strasburg (36), Jonathan Villar (31) and Starling Marte (24) did most of the damage, helping the Rookies overcome the "efforts" of Eugenio Suarez (0), Christian Yelich (1), A.J. Pierzynski (4), Chris Carter (5) and Brandon Phillips (6).

Rubby De La Rosa, who is out with an arm injury,
has scored 0 points for Hundley Eyes this year and
earned our Dud of the Week award.
    6. Arbitration Losers (1,349 points, 3-5, last week 5): It was a week of blah for Tim's team, which didn't have any noteworthy performances in a loss to the Misfits. Brandon Crawford (20) was the high man, and aces Madison Bumgarner (12) and Zack Greinke (11) were good but not great. Kudos to Gio Gonzalez for posting a 2 on Monday and a 2 on Saturday for consistency's sake.

    7. Retire 21 (1,347 points, 3-5, last week 7): All of a sudden, Ray's team isn't that far out of 3rd place in the rankings. Kris Bryant (24) and Andrew McCutchen (21) led the surge in a win against Goldschmidt Happens, and pitchers Steven Matz (20) and Julio Teheran (20) are stepping up. Matt Carpenter (3) and J.T. Realmuto (6) didn't help much this week, though.

    8. Misfits (1,309 points, 4-4, last week 8): Gregory Polanco (30), Randal Grichuk (24) and Scott Kazmir (22) lifted the Misfits to their 4th win of the season. Not bad considering the shaky outing from Max Scherzer (5) and another disaster from Matt Harvey (-2).

    9. The Lumbar Yard (1,261 points, 3-5, last week 9): It's the same old story for Good Vertebrations, which got a solid offensive performance from everyone but the slumping Anthony Rizzo (6). Again, the pitching was a mess. Adam Wainwright (25) hit the spot, but Shelby Miller, Tanner Roark and Jeremy Hellickson-in-a-Cellickson combined for only 15 points.

    10. Goldschmidt Happens (1,210 points, 2-6, last week 10): Charlie Blackmon (24) and Yangervis Solarte (22) paced the offense, but the pitching wasn't consistent enough for Bill's bunch to pick up a win. Gerrit Cole (18) had a nice outing, but Wei-Yin Chen (13), Vincent Velasquez (5) and Michael Wacha (3) were unable to take advantage of double-start weeks.

    Week 8: Sunday's Roundup

Wilson Ramos is hitting .336 this year.
Studs: Wilson Ramos (PYB) went 3 for 3 with a homer, 4 RBIs and 2 runs. John Lackey (LGM) struck out 6 and allowed 1 run in a 7-inning win. Jonathan Lucroy (FF) tripled, singled, drove in 3 and threw out a base-stealer. Hunter Pence (FF) had 3 doubles, 3 RBIs and 2 runs. Clayton Kershaw (FF) struck out 10 and allowed 2 runs in a 7.2-inning no-decision.

Dud: Jeurys Familia (FF) allowed 2 runs in an inning and took the loss.
