Week 18: Saturday's report

This photo includes one guy who's not on a FBLG roster
and one guy who probably shouldn't be.
STUDS: Show of hands — how many of you expected Francisco Liriano (Misfits) to be 12-4 with a 2.02 ERA? The Pittsburgh lefty allowed no runs and struck out 6 in a 7-inning win. Devin Mesoraco (free agent) had the only offensive performance of note, bashing a 2-run homer and a solo homer. He's currently available in 100 percent of FBLG leagues.

DUDS: Delmon Young (Fish) went 0 for 5 with an error. Evan Gattis (Braun) also went 0 for 5 with an error, but at least he had an RBI groundout. Scott Feldman (Misfits) got roughed up by the Mariners — snicker — to the tune of 5 runs in 4.2 innings. Feldman struck out 4 but took the loss.

Head-to-head scores

Arbitration Losers 160, Silver State Sagebrushers 137
Lawyers, Guns & Money 163, Fresh Fish 127

Week 18: Friday's report

Cody Ross seemed extra motivated against the Red Sox.
STUDS: Cody Ross (Fish) punished his former team, recording a homer, 2 doubles, a single, a steal, 3 RBIs and 2 runs. Jose Fernandez (AL) dominated again, striking out 14 Indians and allowing no runs in an 8-inning win. He also had a sacrifice fly. Madison Bumgarner (Braun) allowed 1 run and struck out 11 in a 7-inning win. Allen Craig (AL) homered, singled twice, drove in 3 and scored 3 runs. Brandon Belt (SSS) was a double shy of the cycle, drove in 2 and scored twice.

DUDS: Travis Wood (PYB) was a mess, allowing 5 runs on 7 hits and 5 walks with 2 strikeouts in a 3.1-inning loss. Bronson Arroyo (Rookies) allowed 7 runs and struck out 5 in a 3.2-inning loss. Didi Gregorius (free agent) hauled in the prestigious Pedro Alvarez Award, going 0 for 4 with 4 strikeouts and an error.

Week 18: Thursday's report

Justin Upton is hitting like it's April again.
STUDS: Julio Teheran (Braun) struck out 11 Rockies (well, there was no Cargo and no Cuddyer, and Tulo got tossed, but STILL) and allowed 1 run in a 5-inning win. He also singled, doubled, scored a run and had an RBI. Justin Upton (SSS) hit a 3-run homer and a 2-run homer. Anthony Rizzo (LGM) hit 2 solo homers. Matt Cain (Fish) allowed 1 run and struck out 7 in an 8-inning win.

DUDS: Pedro Alvarez (LGM) went 0 for 3 and made his 20th error of the season. Jonathan Papelbon (PYB) blew a save, took the loss and allowed 2 runs in 1 inning. He also cost Cole Hamels a victory, so it was a double whammy for PYB.

TRANSACTION: Lawyers, Guns & Money places ESPN's favorite son, Yadier Molina, on the DL and re-acquires Wilson Ramos to take his place in the lineup.

Head-to-head scores

Silver State Sagebrushers 96, Arbitration Losers 85
Fresh Fish 89, Lawyers, Guns & Money 82

Week 18: Wednesday's report

This man stole 2 bases and avoided getting hit in the
groin with a fly ball. Shocking, right?
STUDS: Homer Bailey (Fish) allowed 1 unearned run and struck out 7 in an 8.1-inning win (good job, Padres!). Freddie Freeman (Misfits) had 4 singles, 2 RBIs and 2 runs. Mike Minor (Muumuu) singled, scored and shut down the Road Rox. He struck out 6 in 7 shutout innings to earn the win. Matt Holliday (AL) had 3 singles, 2 RBIs, 2 steals and a run.

DUDS: The Misfits dumped Kyle Kendrick just in time. The Phillies' righty took the loss, allowed 7 runs (6 of them earned) and struck out zero Giants in 2 brutal innings. Gio Gonzalez (Rookies) got roughed up to the tune of 10 runs and a loss to Detroit. He struck out 3 in 3.1 innings. Mark Ellis (LGM) was a roto nightmare, starting the game on the bench and coming on as a defensive replacement — just in time to make an error as LGM teammate Yasiel Puig nearly crashed into him on a popup.

Head-to-head scores

Silver State Sagebrushers 80, Arbitration Losers 56
Fresh Fish 64, Lawyers, Guns & Money 63
Misfits 103, Rookies 60

Week 18: Tuesday's report

How much money could you have won if you had bet that this man's
team would be the only one with a .600 winning percentage on trade
deadline day? A doubleheader sweep of the Cards in the midst of a
5-game series has the Pirates on top of the NL Central and baseball.
STUDS:  Freddie Freeman (Misfits) walloped 2 homers, scored 3 runs and drove in 4. A.J. Burnett (Muumuu) was the best starter on a day of no-decisions and losses, striking out 9 and allowing 1 run in 7 innings. Kenley Jansen (Muumuu) struck out 2 in 1 scoreless inning to earn the vulture win.  Andrew McCutchen (LGM) enjoyed his team's doubleheader sweep of the Cardinals, thank you very much. He had 3 hits, including a double and a homer, drove in 2 and scored 3 times.

DUDS: The Pirates-Cards doubleheader wasn't so kind to everyone. Matt Carpenter (PYB) went 0 for 8 with a walk. Allen Craig (AL) went 0 for 5 and is in an 0 for 22 slump. Poor guy's average is all the way down to .318! And Garrett Jones (Fish) was 0 for 3 with an error.

Week 18: Monday's report

Fortunately for Aroldis Chapman, blowing a save isn't a crime.
Though Tim might think otherwise, especially since it cost
Mike Leake a win and therefore was a double-whammy for
the Arbitration Losers.
STUDS: Daniel Murphy (Test. Braun) had 2 hits, 2 runs, 3 RBIs and a stolen base. Andrelton Simmons (Test. Braun) had 3 hits, including a double and a walkoff triple, and 2 RBIs. Carlos Gonzalez (PYB) returned after missing a few games and went 5 for 5 with a run, 2 RBIs, 2 steals and a caught stealing. Francisco Liriano (Misfits) continued to dominate, striking out 8 and allowing 1 earned run in a 7-inning win against the best offense in the league.

DUDS: Aroldis Chapman owns this category today in spectacular fashion. He came in with a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 9th inning against the Padres, walked Yonder Alonso and then gave up a pinch-hit, walkoff homer to Chris Denorfia and his giant nose. That's good for a minus-5 for the Cuban Missile.

NOTE: Manwaring a Muumuu places a conditional DL move on Carlos Quentin and his ever-balky knee. Denard Span would replace him in the lineup.

The Check Swing: Week 17

Welcome to the Marvin Gaye edition of the FBLG weekly wrap-up. In essence, the theme is "What's Going On" with one week left before the playoffs.

1. Manwaring a Muumuu (3,070 points, 12-5, last week 1): The Muumuu crew lost to a blazing-hot LGM team but kept plugging along in the points race, pushing its lead over the Misfits to 214 points and seemingly locking down the regular-season championship. The Muumuu crew also has clinched a first-round bye in the playoffs — PYB could still tie for second in the standings but trails Muumuu by 420 points for the tiebreaker. What's Going On: Domonic Brown has a concussion, Carl Crawford is having hot flashes, Jedd Gyorko can't hit and Aramis Ramirez's status is unknown.

2. Misfits (2,856 points, 13-4, last week 2): Reid's boys have clinched a first-round bye in the playoffs, and the team's key players are all healthy at the right time. All that's left to fight for this week is second place in the regular season — and LGM is right on Reid's heels. What's Going On: Adam Wainwright, Tony Cingrani and Francisco Liriano look like three-quarters of a great rotation. How will Scott Feldman fare against the beasts of the AL East?

3. Lawyers, Guns & Money (2,792 points, 9-8, last week 4): Matt's team had a phenomenal week, posting 228 points with all but two players in double digits. Anthony Rendon scored minus-2 and looks like the only weak spot in the lineup. A deep playoff run looks like a certainty for this dangerous team. What's Going On: Tim Hudson's season-ending injury could be a blow to a team already dealing with Lance Lynn's sudden inconsistency.

The Fresh Fish haven't been as fresh as advertised.
4. Arbitration Losers (2,756 points, 9-8, last week 5): Tim's team moved up to fourth place in the rankings thanks to the fall of the Braunies. The Arbitration Losers scored 213 points and are showing good balance with hitting and pitching. Neil Walker is healthy again, and Jonathan Lucroy has been mashing for the past few weeks. What's Going On: How will the outfield carousel look with Gerardo Parra struggling, Nate Schierholtz hitting, and David DeJesus, Matt Holliday and Matt Kemp getting healthy?

5. Testosteraun Braun (2,740 points, 10-7, last week 3): Ryan Braun gets suspended and Bill's team drops two places in the rankings. Coincidence? Probably not. The Braunies have had a rough month, but at least they lead FBLG in Mets on a roster (Murphy, Young, Hefner, Marcum and Duda). What's Going On: A season that began with so much promise has reached a point where Bill is using Logan Schafer and Eric Young Jr. in two of his outfield spots.

6. Pitch You Blockhead (2,650 points, 11-6, last week 6): Scott's team is sixth in points but third in the standings, which points to good timing on the schedule. This week, PYB managed to hold off the Sagebrushers despite getting only 26 points from the dynamic outfield trio of Shin-Soo Choo, Carlos Gonzalez and Starling Marte. What's Going On: How will Scott handle his 6-man rotation in the playoffs? Gerrit Cole, Travis Wood, Tim Lincecum, Cole Hamels, Kris Medlen and Dan Haren can be a potent staff if they actually have good games when they're in the lineup.

7. Going Going Gonzo (2,624 points, 5-12, last week 7): Jay Bruce's 32-point week wasn't enough for Gonzo in a close loss to Reid's Misfits. The slumping Rockies and Brewers have been tough on a squad that carries Nolan Arenado, Wilin Rosario, Nori Aoki and Jean Segura. What's Going On: Management seems to have taken the summer off. B.J. Upton and Trevor Cahill are injured, and poachers have emptied the Gonzo bench.

8. Rookies (2,539 points, 7-10, last week 8): Henry's team has struggled in recent weeks, but the Rookies still look like a team that can cause problems for opponents in the playoffs. Carlos Gomez just keeps on hitting, and stealing bases, and driving in runs, and scoring runs, and... What's Going On: Too many Rookies are having unimpressive seasons. Can Yovani Gallardo, David Freese, Adam LaRoche and Jason Heyward hit their stride in time for it to matter?

9. Silver State Sagebrushers (2,464 points, 6-11, last week 9): The Sagebrushers could have come away with a victory if Brandon Belt, Justin Upton and Dexter Fowler had combined for more than 8 points this week. Or if the Sagebrushers weren't playing Bullpen Roulette in Arizona. What's Going On: Is it really possible that the rotation of Clayton Kershaw, Jorge De La Rosa, Charlie Morton and Kyle Lohse is one of the best in FBLG?

10. Fresh Fish (2,401 points, 3-14, last week 10): The Fish are getting healthier, but it doesn't seem to matter. The hitting was pretty good this week — thanks to Giancarlo Stanton's 30 points, Todd Frazier's 24 and Hanley Ramirez's 23 — but the pitching fell flat. Also, Miguel Montero, Garrett Jones and Cody Ross continue to scuffle. What's Going On: Good luck counting on any consistency from Matt Cain, Barry Zito, Homer Bailey and Zack Greinke.

Week 17: Sunday's report

Travis Wood has 3 homers this year. That's only
2 fewer than Matt Kemp.
STUDS: Jose Fernandez (Arbitration) allowed 2 runs and struck out 13 in an 8-inning victory. Tony Cingrani (Misfits) struck out 11 in 7 scoreless innings. Ian Desmond (Muumuu) had 2 doubles, 2 singles, 2 RBIs and 3 runs. Michael Cuddyer (Muumuu) homered, doubled, scored 2 runs and drove in 2. Alfonso Soriano (Rookies) homered, singled 3 times, drove in 3 runs and scored twice. Travis Wood (PYB) homered, singled and struck out 7 while allowing 1 unearned run in a 7-inning win.

DUDS: No players posted a negative score today, so we'll go Dud-free and give the Anthony Rendons and Sergio Romos of the world a break.

Final head-to-head scores

Arbitration Losers 213, Fresh Fish 162
Testosteraun Braun 173, Rookies 161
Pitch You Blockhead 186, Silver State Sagebrushers 166
Misfits 178, Going Going Gonzo 169
Lawyers, Guns & Money 228, Manwaring a Muumuu 200

Week 17: Saturday's report

At this point, the only person fearing the
beard is Testosteraun Braun's owner.
STUDS: Neil Walker (Arbitration) had a single, 2 doubles, 2 RBIs and 2 runs. Hyun-jin Ryu (LGM) allowed 1 run and struck out 9 in a 7-inning win. Troy Tulowitzki (Misfits) homered, singled twice, drove in 2 and scored 2 runs. Dan Haren (PYB) doubled, scored, got the win and struck out 6 while allowing 1 run in 7 innings. Yonder Alonso (PYB) doubled, singled twice and drove in 4.

DUDS: Sergio Romo (Braun) took another loss, allowing 1 run and striking out 1 in 0.1 inning. Anthony Rendon (LGM) is becoming a frequent contributor to the Duds list. He went 0 for 4 with an error. Pablo Sandoval (PYB) also went 0 for 4 with an error. Scott Feldman (Misfits) allowed 4 runs and struck out 1 in a 5-inning loss.
