Top catchers based on 2011 stats

Top available catchers in the FBLG based on 2011 stats

1. Miguel Montero, Arz 324

2. Yadier Molina, StL 300

3. Brian McCann, Atl 282

4. Jonathan Lucroy, Mil 235

5. Wilson Ramos, Was 231

6. Carlos Ruiz, Phi 227

7. John Buck, Mia 226

8. Geovany Soto, Chi 213

9. Nick Hundley, SD 176

10. Ramon Hernandez, Cin 171

10. Rod Barajas, Pit 171

Notes: Catchers don't normally score a ton because they don't play 150 games a season. The question is how soon do you go after the elite in this category. Ramos is an emerging young catcher. Hernandez could be aided by a move to Coors Field. Buster Posey didn't make this list as he works his way back from a serious ankle injury. And Devin Mescoraco is a highly-regarded prospect for the Reds.

Top third basemen based on 2011 stats

Top available third basemen in the FBLG based on 2011 stats

1. Aramis Ramirez, Mil 381

2. Ryan Roberts, Arz 300

3. Pablo Sandoval, SF 292

3. Chipper Jones, Atl 292

5. Casey McGehee, Pit 233

6. David Wright, NY 232

6. Placido Polanco, Phi 232

8. Ty Wigginton, Phi 231

9. Ryan Zimmerman, Was 230

10. Chase Headley, SD 220

Notes: The numbers on this list are not very impressive. But the position is deeper than it looks because so many players are battling back from injury. Sandoval's numbers would have been closer to Ramirez's if he hadn't missed six weeks with a broken hand. The same could be said for Wright, Zimmerman and Hanley Ramirez, whose name didn't even make the Top 10. Others not to make the list because of injury-shortened seasons include David Freese, Scott Rolen and Juan Uribe.

Top shortstops based on 2011 stats

Top available shortstops in the FBLG based on 2011 stats

1. Troy Tulowitzki, Col 412

2. Jose Reyes, Mia 392

3. Starlin Castro, Chi 383

4. Jimmy Rollins, Phi 353

5. Ian Desmond, Was 276

6. Alex Gonzalez, Mil 273

7. Jason Bartlett, SD 244

8. Clint Barmes, Pit 212

9. Stephen Drew, Arz 192

10. Ronnie Cedeno, NY 182

Notes: Tulowitzki and Reyes could be beasts if they could play 150+ games in a season. Castro and Rollins are good alternatives, as is Drew if he can bounce back from injury. Desmond and Gonzalez are solid, but nothing special. But after that, things get very lean, requiring a leap of faith on a young, untested player.

Top second basemen based on 2011 stats

Top available second basemen in the FBLG based on 2011 stats

1. Brandon Phillips, Cin 412

2. Neil Walker, Pit 369

3. Dan Uggla, Atl 338

4. Danny Espinosa, Was 316

5. Omar Infante, Mia 297

6. Aaron Hill, Arz 291

7. Rickie Weeks, Mil 275

7. Darwin Barney, Chi 275

9. Mark Ellis, LA 251

10. Chase Utley, Phi 249

Notes: Phillips is money in the bank, but there are other options with some baggage like Uggla, Utley and Weeks. Walker is solid. Some may have been surprised to see Espinosa's name so high. But if you don't draft one of these 10 names, the options become thin quickly.

Top first basemen based on 2011 stats

Top available first baseman in the FBLG based on 2011 stats

1. Joey Votto, Cin 454

2. Ryan Howard, Phi 386

3. Lance Berkman, StL 373

4. Carlos Lee, Hou 372

5. Gaby Sanchez, Fla 348

6. Freddie Freeman, Atl 345

7. James Loney, LA 312

8. Todd Helton, Col 289

9. Aubrey Huff, SF 268

10. Garrett Jones, Pit 255

Notes: Berkman, Lee and Jones are former OFs making the move to 1B this season. Huff could see time at 1B or OF. Howard is coming off an Achilles injury that could delay his start to the season. There are a lot of young players or players coming off injury at a normally deep position that was gutted by the departure of Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder
