Another good young Cardinals outfielder? Just what the league wanted to hear.
Studs: Stephen Piscotty (AL) was 4-4 with a triple and 2 runs scored. Joey Votto (R21) homered, singled twice and drove in 3. Week 21, semifinals: Friday roundup

Only one position player earned a spot on the Studs list today, so he deserves to get his picture in the paper.
Studs: Cole Hamels (Misfits) struck out 10 and allowed 1 run in an 8-inning win. Taylor Jungmann (Misfits) got the win and fanned 5 in 7 shutout innings. Clayton Kershaw (R21) had a classic Clayton Kershaw game, striking out 14 and allowed 1 run in an 8-inning victory. Aaron Nola (Bryce) struck out 6 and allowed 1 run in a 7-inning win. Gregory Polanco (R21) doubled, singled twice, scored twice, drove in a run and stole a base.

Week 21, semifinals: Thursday roundup

Mr. and Mrs. Cole: that's G-A-R-R-E-T-T. We wonder if Gerrit Cole and Garret Anderson are part of a support group.
Studs: Gerrit Cole (Bryce), who clearly doesn't mind that his parents don't know how to spell "Garrett," improved to 15-7 by striking out 4 and allowing 1 run in 7.1 innings. Joe Ross (CM), who clearly isn't as afraid of the strike zone as his big brother, struck out 7 and allowed 1 run in a 7-inning win. Madison Bumgarner (AL), who clearly doesn't mind being named after an adult film star, struck out 12 in a 6-inning win, allowing an earned run and adding a single. Zach Greinke (PYB), who clearly is the most successful person ever to have a mullet, tossed 7 shutout innings and struck out 9 to earn the win.

Duds: Freddy Galvis (Rookies), apparently competing for the Ian Desmond "Dr. StrangeGlove" Trophy, made another error. That's three in two days for the tiny Phillie. Wilson Ramos (Bryce) singled and made an error. Kyle Schwarber (AZ) threw one in the general vicinity of second base for an error. Brandon Phillips (FF) was 0-4 with an error.

Week 21, semifinals: Wednesday roundup

You know, we pick on the Phillies a lot on this blog. Sometimes the low-hanging fruit is the sweetest, though.
Anyway, chances are good that Freddy Galvis mucked up this play.
Studs: Andrew McCutchen (Rookies) doubled, homered and drove in 4. Justin Upton (R21) homered twice and drove in 3.

Duds: Freddy Galvis (Rookies) developed a baseball allergy, going 0-5 with a whiff and two errors. Jimmy Nelson developed a strike zone allergy, walking an amazing 8 batters in a 3.1-inning loss. He allowed 5 earned runs and struck out 4, also uncorking a wild pitch.

Week 21, semifinals: Tuesday roundup

We hope that Jake Arrieta takes a chance to re-create this scene during the Cubs' West Coast tour.
Forget that Jonathan Lucroy is being out-slugged
this year by Adeiny Hechavarria, and just enjoy
the moment, Scott.
Studs: Jonathan Lucroy (PYB) emerged from a season-long funk, hitting 2 homers and a double and driving in 3. Speaking of season-long funks, Jimmy Rollins (FF) hit a 2-run homer and doubled. Clean-shaven Stephen Strasburg (FF) allowed 2 runs and struck out 7 in a 6-inning win. Jake Arrieta (AZ) struck out 8 in a 6-inning win, allowing no earned runs and adding a double, a run scored and an error. He now leads the National League with 16 wins. Alex Wood (SE) had a classic Alex Wood day, striking out 4, walking 3, singling, scoring, stranding runners all over the place and allowing an earned run in a 5.2-inning win. Noah Syndergaa(aaaaa)rd (AL) struck out 9 and allowed 2 earned runs in a 5-inning win, adding an RBI double. Dee Gordon (R21) had 2 singles, 2 runs and stole 4 bases, which raises the question of how the game was able to be finished if he took all the bases. Jaime Garcia (CM) struck out 6 and allowed 1 run in 6 innings, earning the win and lowering his ERA to a revolting 1.77.

Duds: Yangervis Solarte (PYB) had a single and an error. James Shields (PYB) allowed 5 runs and struck out 2 in a 5.2-inning loss. Jose Reyes (SE) was 0-4 with an error. Welington Castillo (AZ) was 0-2 and committed an error on a catcher's interference, which is totally the lamest way to commit an error. Brandon Crawford had the ultimate dud day, going 0-3 with two strikeouts, four men left on base and an error before leaving with an injury. He is reported to also have stolen an old lady's wheelchair and kicked a puppy.

Week 21, semifinals: Monday roundup

These three Mets combined to score 30 FBLG points Monday.
Studs: The Mets went absolutely insane, slugging 8 homers in a win at Philadelphia. Wilmer Flores (PYB) hit 2 of them and a double, driving in 5. Daniel Murphy (Misfits) homered, doubled twice, scored 3 runs and committed an error. Travis d'Arnaud (R21) had a homer, a double and drove in 3. In other games, Brandon Phillips (FF) homered, tripled and drove in 4. Gregory Polanco (R21) was 4-5 with 2 doubles, a run, an RBI and a steal.

Duds: Kyle Schwarber (AZ) went 0-4 with 4 Ks and an error. Paul Goldschmidt (SE) went 0-4 with an error.

    The Check Swing; Week 20

The new odds-on favorites in the FBLG playoffs are named in honor of this man.
The first round of the playoffs is over, and 3 of the 4 lower seeds have advanced. Just like the real thing, fantasy baseball is wacky. Soler Eclipse, the No. 8 seed, shocked top-seeded Already Zaun as the Zaunies picked an awful time to have their worst week of the season. Arbitration Losers and Misfits both lost the battle but won the war, taking big leads in the first week and holding off their opponents to advance.

This means our two newest owners will do battle in the semifinals, as will two of our longest-tenured owners. Ray's Retire 21 squad, the lone top seed to advance, will face Adam's upstart Soler Eclipse. And Tim's Arbitration Losers will do battle with Reid's Misfits. These will be two-week matchups, with most cumulative points advancing to the three-week finals.

The rest of the teams fall into the consolation round robin for the next five weeks. The top two squads at the end of the round robin will face off in the season's final week for the consolation championship.

    1. Already Zaun (3,640 points, last week 1): What a stinker. The pitching was good but the offense went absolutely in the tank, with Matt Carpenter (2), Kike Hernandez (3), Adrian Gonzalez (4), Ben Paulsen (5) and Neil Walker (9) shooting blanks at the plate. The Zaunies' overall points lead is less than 40 as they try to hold off fast-charging Retire 21.

    2. Retire 21 (3,604 points, last week 2): Meanwhile, all that went wrong for Already Zaun went right for Ray's bunch. Newcomer Raisel Iglesias pitched great (though, since he's a Red, didn't earn any wins). Kershaw and deGrom did their thing, Charlie Morton pitched like an ace and, oh yeah, the offense. Starlng Marte put up 30, Dee Gordon added 29, Jung-Ho Kang had 22... everyone but Cesar Hernandez was in double digits.

    3. Arbitration Losers (3,398 points, last week 3): A good-enough week for Tim's bunch, with Stephen Piscotty (25) and Jayson Werth (20) pacing the offense. Madison Bumgarner led the staff - and also homered - and contributions were solid across the board to make up for rare down weeks from Brandon Belt and Buster Posey. How worried are the Losers about Jon Lester's recent struggles?

    4. Pitch You Blockhead (3,373 points, last week 4): Three 20-point performances from Scott's infield, and none from Kolten Wong? The young second baseman posted a minus-1 for the week, and the outfield and pitching weren't enough to bolster the strong weeks from Nolan Arenado, Wilmer Flores and Yangervis Solarte. Zach Greinke had a rare poor start at the worst time for Scott, who really needs Carlos Gomez to get on track in Houston.

    5. Chateau Marmol (3293 points, last week 5): Matt's bunch did their darnedest to get back into it against the Arbitration Losers, but the comeback fell short. The Cubs' huge week led to 85 points from Matt's infield, with Kris Bryant posting a 30. And A.J. Pollock continued his torrid stretch with a 36. But the pitching was weak, with Max Scherzer taking a loss, and catcher Yasmani Grandal (1) fell victim to the Dodger Flu.

    6. Soler Eclipse (3,242 points, last week 6): The offense did all the damage for Adam in the upset win, with Jose Reyes (21), Paul Goldschmidt (20), Nick Markakis (20) and Gerardo Parra (19) leading the way. The pitchers scored only 31 points, 25 of which came from Francisco Liriano. Not usually a recipe for success, but it was enough to get to the semifinals.

    7. Rookies (3,189 points, last week 7): Henry was playing for nothing this week, and his team responded like they knew it. A pair of decent starts for Jordan Zimmermann were the only pitching highlights of the week, and no hitter got to 20 points, though Cameron Maybin, Martin Prado and Freddy Galvis had nice weeks.

    8. Misfits (3,187 points, last week 8): Eighth in the points race, and now on to the semifinals for Reid's bunch. The Mets' huge offensive weekend led to 55 combined points from Curtis Granderson and Yoenis Cespedes, and old fart Matt Kemp pitched in with 22. That plus a couple decent starts from Cole Hamels were enough to make up for an off-week for the infield and young pitching.

    9. The Bryce is Right (3,186 points, last week 9): We're sure Bill was really pleased that his team put up a 211 when it didn't really matter. Lucas Duda continues to battle injury and Matt Garza was awful in two starts. Everyone else on the team scored 13 or more points, led (again) by Dexter Fowler's 26. Khris Davis put up 25 and Aaron Nola (26), Mark Melancon (21) and Gerrit Cole (20) led the pitching staff.

    10. Fresh Fish (2,912 points, last week 10): Rick has sequestered himself in Fresh Fish HQ to start planning the first pick in the 2016 FBLG Draft. We'll go out on a limb and guess it's a Marlin. Carlos Gonzalez and Stephen Strasburg had nice weeks as the Fish limped into the consolation round. But, hey, David Wright could be back this week!

Week 20, first round: Sunday roundup

We've run so many shots of Phillies pitchers as Duds this year. Here's Aaron Nola being a Stud.
Studs: Jason Hammel (PYB) had an RBI single, struck out 8 and allowed 2 runs in a 6.1-inning win. Stephen Piscotty (AL) had 2 homers, a triple and 5 RBIs. Clayton Kershaw (R21) allowed 1 run and struck out 10 in an 8-inning no-decision. Jason Heyward (CM) was a homer shy of the cycle and scored twice. Kris Bryant (CM) had 2 homers, a single, 3 RBIs and 4 runs. Aaron Nola (Bryce) shut down the pitiful Marlins, striking out 6 in 8 shutout innings.

Duds: Ryan Vogelsong (FF) took the loss, allowing 3 runs and striking out 2 in 3.1 innings. Joey Votto (R21) committed an error. Matt Wisler (Rookies) allowed 7 runs and struck out 2 in a 2.2-inning loss.

Jung-Ho Kang (R21) hit 2 solo homers. Todd Frazier (Bryce) had 2 doubles and 2 runs.

Duds: Already Zaun's offense, which managed all of 4 hits on Saturday, 2 by pitcher Carlos Martinez. D.J. LeMahieu (Rookies) was 0 for 5 with an error. Andrew McCutchen (Rookies) was caught stealing.
