Week 3: Saturday's Roundup

Here's something you don't see often: Craig Kimbrel being
yanked mid-inning.
Studs: Ryan Braun (RR) homered twice — including the game-winner, singled, drove in 3 and scored 4 runs. Jonathan Lucroy (PYB) had 3 doubles, 2 RBIs and a run. Marcell Ozuna (PYB) homered, singled and drove in 4. Dan Haren (RMH) singled, scored, struck out 5 and allowed 2 earned runs (and 3 unearned runs) in a 7.1-inning win. Lance Lynn (RMH) had an RBI double and struck out 5 while allowing 1 run in a 5-inning win. Ervin Santana (Rookies) scored a run and struck out 7 while allowing 1 run in a 7-inning win. Justin Upton (Rookies) homered, singled twice, stole a base, drove in 3 and scored twice. Henderson Alvarez (free agent) struck out 4 in a 2-hit shutout of Seattle.
Duds: Jason Grilli (Tanana) allowed the game-losing homer and took the loss. Also a Dud: Ervin Santana's hair (Rookies). Seriously, it's just weird.

Scores

E-3 142, Tanana in the Tailpipe 114

Week 3: Friday's Roundup

Troy Tulowitzki does some advanced stretching even on
home runs to ensure he doesn't get injured.
Studs: Aaron Harang (free agent) struck out 5 in 7 no-hit innings and lowered his ERA to 0.70. Giancarlo Stanton (FF) made an error but made up for it by hitting the game-winning grand slam, singling twice, scoring twice and driving in 5. Troy Tulowitzki (RMH) homered, doubled, singled, drove in 5 and scored twice. Tyson Ross (DZ) struck out 9 and got the win in 8 shutout innings. Gio Gonzalez (RR) allowed 1 run and struck out 7 in a 7-inning win.

Duds: Matt Carpenter (Tanana) went 0 for 3 with 2 errors. Paul Goldschmidt (Rookies) went 0 for 4 with 3 Ks and was caught stealing. Jean Segura (AL) went 1 for 5 but was caught stealing and made an error. Yadier Molina (AL) went 1 for 4 with an error.

Week 3: Thursday's Roundup

Adam Wainwright waves to one of the Best Fans in Baseball.
Studs: Is this the second coming of the Deadball Era? For the second consecutive day, there were no standout offensive performances. We'll lower the bar a bit to at least get one hitter on the list. Adam Wainwright (Tanana) struck out 8 in a 2-hit shutout and tacked on a single, a double, a run and an RBI. Hyun-jin Ryu (FF) struck out 3 and didn't allow a run in a 7-inning win. Starling Marte (DZ) had 2 singles, 2 steals and 3 runs.

Duds: Would it be unfair to put all of the Nationals on this list? Ian Desmond (DZ) went 1 for 4 with 2 Ks and 2 errors and has made 7 errors in his past 8 games. He's the leader in the clubhouse for the annual Jose Offerman Award. Jayson Werth (FF) went 0 for 4 with an error.

Scores

Ryan's Rangers 96, Rookies 83
Danger Zaun 81, Misfits 80
E-3 95, Tanana in the Tailpipe 74
Fresh Fish 121, Arbitration Losers 65
Rocky Mountain High 84, Pitch You Blockhead 67

Week 3: Wednesday's Roundup

Johnny Cueto certainly didn't look this happy in 2013.
Studs: It's time to celebrate FBLG aces. Why? Because no FBLG hitter earned a spot on the Studs list (except Justin Morneau, but that homer, double and single don't do any good on the Tanana bench). Johnny Cueto (E-3) struck out 12 and singled in a 3-hit shutout. Jose Fernandez (DZ) struck out 10 and allowed 3 unearned runs in 7 innings. Cliff Lee (AL) struck out 13 and allowed 1 run in a complete-game loss. Julio Teheran (RR) struck out 4 in a 3-hit shutout.

Duds: Miguel Montero (E-3) went 0 for 4 with an error. Addison Reed (Rookies) made an error and allowed 1 earned run and 1 unearned run in 1 inning. Pedro Alvarez (RMH) went 0 for 3 with 2 Ks and an error. Matt Kemp (Misfits) went 0 for 3 with 2 Ks and an error — and he even got picked off.

Scores

Ryan's Rangers 82, Rookies 78
Danger Zaun 70, Misfits 69
E-3 88, Tanana in the Tailpipe 39
Fresh Fish 91, Arbitration Losers 52

Week 3: Tuesday's Roundup

"Hey, Arroyo! Is that your uniform
number or your ERA?"
Studs: Giancarlo Stanton (FF) doubled, homered, scored 3 runs and drove in 5. Plenty of candidates came out of the completed game and the regularly scheduled game between the Reds and Pirates, but we'll limit their contributions to just a few. Mike Leake (FF) struck out 8 and allowed 3 runs in a 6.2-inning win. He also did some damage with his bat, mashing a homer and a double in a 23-point performance (bummer about the error, Mike). Neil Walker (PYB) had 3 homers, a double and a single across the two games. Joey Votto (Misfits) hit a 2-run homer in the first game, then went 4 for 4 in the second one.

Duds: Bronson Arroyo (Misfits) allowed 9 runs and struck out only 1 in a 3.1-inning loss. Stephen Strasburg (DZ) allowed 6 runs and struck out 5 in a 4-inning loss. Chase Headley (AL) went 0 for 4 with an error. Jayson Werth (FF) went 0 for 1 with 2 walks and an error.

Scores

Rookies 65, Ryan's Rangers 51
Misfits 38, Danger Zaun 19
E-3 35, Tanana in the Tailpipe 33
Fresh Fish 78, Arbitration Losers 23
Rocky Mountain High 63, Pitch You Blockhead 44

Week 3: Monday's Roundup

We looked for a shot of Uggla playing defense, but Google SafeSearch was on.
Studs: Dan Uggla (Fish) hit 2 homers and drove in 5 runs, including a go-ahead grand slam in the 9th inning. Being Dan Uggla, he also made an error. Evan Gattis (Rookies) hit 2 homers, drove in 3 and made an error. Anthony Rendon (RR) had a double, triple and 3 RBIs. Andrelton Simmons (Rookies) homered and tripled for the second day in a row. Jordan Zimmermann (Rookies) finally looked like himself, striking out 7 and allowing 2 runs in 7 innings and adding 2 hits and a run scored. Lance Lynn (RMH) shut down baseball's best team, striking out 11 Brewers in 7 shutout innings.

Duds: Chooch Ruiz (Tanana) went 0 for 3 with a walk and 2 errors. Every major Brewers hitter besides Jean Segura - Carlos Gomez, Ryan Braun, Aramis Ramirez and Jonathan Lucroy combined to go 0-15 with 7 Ks.

Notes: Monday's Reds-Pirates game was suspended after 6 innings (and 10 home runs) because of rain. It will be completed Tuesday afternoon before the regularly scheduled game, and owners of Starling Marte (DZ), Neil Walker (PYB) and Joey Votto (Misfits) should all be excited for some bonus points. Unfortunately, no one owns Gaby Sanchez, and Ryan Ludwick (DZ) and Todd Frazier (RMH) are on the bench this week, so none of those homers did anyone any good. Oh well. By the way, the record for homers in a 9-inning game is 12, so let's have at it, guys!

Injuries: OF Michael Cuddyer (AL) and OF Curtis Granderson (E-3) both left Monday's games with injuries after crashing into walls. Both are expected to miss a game or two, at least, but neither is expected to be placed on the DL at this point.

Scores

Rookies 61, Ryan's Rangers 32
Misfits 15, Danger Zaun 6
E-3 21, Tanana in the Tailpipe 11
Fresh Fish 28, Arbitration Losers 6
Rocky Mountain High 32, Pitch You Blockhead 8

Week 2: The Check Swing

.
Welcome to The Check Swing, our look at the past week in FBLG. This week is the Tom Petty edition, in which we associate each team with a song from Petty's catalog. Enjoy.

1. Ryan's Rangers (399 points, 2-0, last week 5): "The Damage You've Done." Bill's offense has done plenty of damage, led by his trio of 40-point outfielders — Ryan Braun, Carlos Gomez and Angel Pagan. Anthony Rendon has been a pleasant surprise and also has surpassed 40 points. On the downside, the Rangers' closer isn't even a closer — Rex Brothers is being used in Colorado as a late-inning man and hasn't gotten a save opportunity.

2. Arbitration Losers (395 points, 2-0, last week 3): "The Best of Everything." Tim's team might be as balanced as any in FBLG this season. The rotation of Cliff Lee, Gerrit Cole, Tim Hudson and Marco Estrada has performed well, and any offense led by Freddie Freeman, Matt Holliday, Yadier Molina and Michael Cuddyer is bound to be good. Just wait until Jedd Gyorko, Jean Segura and Pablo Sandoval heat up.

3. Fresh Fish (376 points, 1-1, last week 1): "The Waiting." With two key injured players for Rick, it certainly is the hardest part. Propelled primarily by the hot starts of Brandon Belt, Buster Posey, Giancarlo Stanton and Jayson Werth, the Fresh Fish look poised to contend all season. That's certain to be the case if Yovani Gallardo continues to pitch like an ace and Hyun-jin Ryu keeps rolling. If you think this team is tough now, just wait until Clayton Kershaw and Ryan Zimmerman return from the disabled list.

4. Danger Zaun (373 points, 0-2, last week 4): "Too Much Ain't Enough." In this case, too much speed in the outfield ain't enough to get points. Billy Hamilton has had one good game in two weeks, Starling Marte hasn't broken out and A.J. Pollock is on the verge of losing his job. Still, the Rich/Brian team has standouts in Adrian Gonzalez and Aramis Ramirez leading the way, and the Strasburg-Fernandez-Cashner rotation looks like one of FBLG's toughest.

5. Pitch You Blockhead (370 points, 1-1, last week 2): "Something Big." It might not be the best pitching trio in FBLG, but the Greinke-Samardzija-A. Wood group has been awfully close to it in the season's first two weeks. With Scott's team waiting for the inevitable offensive outbursts from Hanley Ramirez and Jay Bruce, PYB is a team to watch in 2014.

6. Tanana in the Tailpipe (360 points, 1-1, last week 7): "A One Story Town." Matt's team to this point has been powered by a dominant ace and a few hot hitters. Adam Wainwright and Mark Trumbo have cracked the 50-point mark already, and Chase Utley isn't far behind. Cole Hamels is coming off the disabled list soon, but the pitching depth is the only thing keeping Tanana from being higher in the rankings. Homer Bailey and someone from the Niese-Gee-McCarthy trio needs to step up.

7. Rocky Mountain High (356 points, 2-0, last week 6): "All Or Nothin'." Jon's team is stacked with boom-or-bust hitters, including Anthony Rizzo, Pedro Alvarez, Carlos Gonzalez, Troy Tulowitzki and Yasiel Puig. The pitching staff looks like the biggest question mark here, with Dan Haren and Lance Lynn being mostly good and Matt Garza and Tim Lincecum being less good. Come back soon, Mat Latos.

8. Misfits (336 points, 1-1, last week 9): "Counting on You." The fortunes of Reid's team seem to be centered on how well Matt Kemp performs this season. If Kemp can get back to all-star form, the Misfits will shoot up the FBLG standings. Until then, Reid needs Chris Johnson, Hunter Pence, Wilin Rosario and Daniel Murphy to get rolling. Madison Bumgarner and Michael Wacha can't be expected to do all of the heavy lifting.

t9. Rookies (284 points, 0-2, last week 10): "Yer So Bad." This isn't meant to be a knock on Henry. It's a criticism of the performances of Cody Asche, who has scored 3 points since opening day, and B.J. Upton, who is duplicating his disappointing 2013. On the flip side, Paul Goldschmidt, Justin Upton and Kyle Lohse have produced 128 of the team's 284 points.

t9. E-3 (284 points, 0-2, last week 8): "Even the Losers." They get lucky sometimes, right? We figure Adam got lucky with his selection of Dee Gordon for a bench spot, as the Los Angeles speedster is getting on base and stealing like mad. Unfortunately, Adam's roster is saddled with underperforming veterans. A.J. Burnett and Matt Cain have been a drag on the rotation; Ryan Howard and David Wright have gotten off to sluggish starts. And when will the star-studded outfield of Andrew McCutchen, Allen Craig and Curtis Granderson start hitting?

Week 2: Sunday's Roundup

This man hit so many homers this week he looks bored celebrating them.
Studs: Freddie Freeman (AL) and Adrian Gonzalez (DZ) continued their hot streaks. Freeman doubled, homered, scored twice and drove in 4, and Gonzalez did the same minus an RBI. Gonzo has homers in four straight games now. Kyle Lohse (Rookies) allowed 1 run and struck out 9 in an 8.2-inning win. Andrelton Simmons (Rookies) homered, tripled and drove in 3. Youngsters Tony Cingrani (RR) and Michael Wacha (Misfits) put up 16-point wins. Cingrani struck out 6 in 6.1 innings, allowed 2 runs and singled, while Wacha struck out 8 in 6.1 innings and allowed 3 runs. Devin Mesoraco (RR) homered and drove in 4.

Duds: Ian Desmond (DZ) needs a trip to the glove doctor after making his fifth error of the week. He also went 0-4 with 2 whiffs. Bartolo Colon (Fish) gave up 4 homers and 9 earned runs in a 5-inning loss.

Final scores

Arbitration Losers 194, Rookies 169
Misfits 183, Fresh Fish 155
Tanana in the Tailpipe 192, Danger Zaun 181
Ryan's Rangers 213, Pitch You Blockhead 154
Rocky Mountain High 171, E-3 124

Week 2: Saturday's Roundup

A year after seemingly having 20 players hit the DL, Fresh Fish
management now faces the loss of Ryan Zimmerman for 4 to 6
weeks. Is Clayton Kershaw due back soon?
Studs: Zack Greinke (PYB) allowed 1 run and struck out 8 in a 5.1-inning win. Alex Wood (PYB) allowed 1 run and struck out 8 in a 5-inning win. Giancarlo Stanton (FF) hit about 1,000 feet worth of homers (a solo shot and a 2-run shot) and singled. Justin Upton (Rookies) made the Studs list for the third consecutive day. This time, he did it with 2 doubles, a single, 2 runs and an RBI. Jimmy Rollins (E-3) singled twice, drove in 2 and scored twice. Oh, he also won the game with a walk-off homer. Adam Wainwright (Tanana) allowed 4 runs but struck out 8 in a 7-inning win. He also had an RBI single and scored.

Duds: Martin Prado (PYB) singled and scored, but that didn't make up for his two errors (Hey, Martin: Check out Ian Desmond's performance to see how it's done). Pedro Alvarez (RMH) went 0 for 2 with an error.
