2010 season ends

With the Giants beating the Padres, there will be no Game 163 or 164, meaning the 2010 season ends.

And the 2010 FBLG overall championship goes to the Pickle Bugs, who finished the season with a 39-point Sunday and 190-point week to give Jon his first FBLG championship since 2001.

The Bugs took a 2-point lead into the final day and got a big 20-point outing from Ted Lilly. Upton No Good got a 15-point outing from Edwin Jackson, but UNG got little else on the day.

The end result was a 22-point margin of victory by the Bugs over UNG, the fourth closest finish in FBLG history behind Bill Kelm (7 points) in 2004, Noelle Martinez (13) in 1993, and Reid English (17) in 1998.

The 4697 winning total is the smallest winning total since Tim Martinez (4618) in 2002.

Also decided on Sunday, the Arbitration Losers secured third place, outdistancing the Gladstone Goatwhisperers 4579-4556. The Goatwhisperers were hoping for that playoff game and a bonus start for Tim Lincecum.

The Fresh Fish locked up last place and the No. 1 overall draft spot in 2011 (if they come back). It was Rick Ingebritson's first last-place finish since 2000. And the Fish were the first team to fail to score 4,000 points in a season since 2006.

Also Sunday, UNG locked up the consolation prize by beating the VC Appraisers 172-148

Here's how the standings shook out.

1. Pickle Bugs (Jon) 4697
2. Upton No Good (Bill-Rich) 4675
3. Arbitration Losers (Tim) 4579
4. Gladstone Goatwhisperers (Arik) 4556
5. Misfits (Reid) 4459
6. VC Appraisers (Kevin-Dave) 4260
7. Pitch You Blockhead (Scott) 4192
8. Triple-A's (Ken) 4173

The Final Weekend

As the 2010 FBLG season heads into its final weekend, there are still storylines to follow:

The Pickle Bugs are nursing a four-point lead over Upton No Good (4603-4599) for the overall championship.

UNG will get one more start this season from Ubaldo Jimenez on Saturday against the Cardinals and Edwin Jackson on Sunday against the Indians.

The Pickle Bugs will counter with three more scheduled pitching starts: Chad Billingsley Saturday vs. the D-backs; Ted Lilly Sunday vs. the D-backs; and Wandy Rodriguez Sunday vs. the Cubs.

The race for third place remains interesting, with the Arbitration Losers holding a 14-point lead over the Gladstone Goatwhisperers (4511-4497). The Misfits (4407) have faded from contention.

The Losers will get a start from Carlos Zambrano on Saturday vs. the Astros. They'll also pick up 14 points from Jon Garland in an emergency start if Jair Jurrjens doesn't pitch this weekend.

The GGs might get a start this weekend from Cole Hamels. But if he does pitch, it may just be for four innings. Should Clayton Kershaw not pitch this weekend, they'll pick up a 3-point start from Ian Kennedy in the emergency role. There's also the hope that Tim Lincecum could pitch Sunday or Monday (tiebreaker), if needed.

And in the consolation final, UNG leads the VC Appraisers 96-83.

This will be the final blog update until the end of the season. Good luck to all.

Final week of 2010 season

As the FBLG moves deeper into its final week of the season, there are still races left.

But one race that is over is the head-to-head championship. The Gladstone Goatwhisperers wrapped up the head-to-head championship with a 150-118 win over the Arbitration Losers. Both teams struggled with keeping healthy players in the lineup every day. The killer for the Losers was their hope of two pitching starts for Jair Jurrjens turned into zero starts. They ended up with a six-point emergency start from Jon Garland.

The Goatwhisperers won the series 2-1. So here's how the head-to-head season ended (almost)

1st, Gladstone Goatwhisperers (Arik)
2nd, Arbitration Losers (Tim)
3rd, Pickle Bugs (Jon)
4th, Misfits (Reid)

The only spot left undetermined is for fifth-place or the consolation championship. Upton No Good faces the VC Appraisers. So far into the final week, UNG leads 52-36.

The bigger races this week are in the overall standings, and that starts with the overall championship.

After Tuesday, the Pickle Bugs lead the overall battle by 21 points over Upton No Good. The big victory was Ted Lilly's win over Ubaldo Jimenez on Monday.

But it's not all good news for the Bugs. They learned Tuesday that Martin Prado is done for the season. However, as per league rules, they cannot replace Prado in their lineup until he's missed 3 games. That means Saturday, at the earliest. They also lost 3B Ryan Zimmerman for the season. With the Phillies clinching, it's unlikely they'll get another start from Roy Oswalt. But they should get one more start each from Lilly, Wandy Rodriguez and Chad Billingsley.

UNG has already lost their No. 1 overall pick for the season -- Hanley Ramirez. But they will almost certainly get one more start from Jimenez, who is still searching for his 20th win of the season. They'll also get starts from Jhoulys Chacin and Yovani Gallardo, and possibly Edwin Jackson.

The other race is for third, fourth and fifth place overall.

The Arbitration Losers got solid starts from Roy Halladay and Carlos Zambrano, helping them surge out to a 42-point advantage over the Goatwhisperers. Hallday likely won't get another start, as he gets ready for the postseason. But Zambrano should get another start.

The Goatwhisperers should get one more start from each of their four starters. However, Cole Hamels' final start figures to be short, perhaps not long enough to qualify for a win. But if the Giants need a tiebreaker game, Tim Lincecum could be in line for two starts.

The Goatwhispers are trying to fend off the Misfits for fourth place. The Misfits trail the GGs by 69 points. That margin could insurmountable considering the Misfits won't get a Week 26 start from ace Adam Wainwright, and Phillies Ryan Howard and Shane Victorino figure to get a lot of rest this weekend.

FBLG near-end update

Sorry, owners for the lack of blog updates. It's been busy for the Commish. But we've been working hard to keep the score sheet updated.

Here's where we stand, heading into Week 25.

For the third consecutive year, the head-to-head finals goes to a deciding third game. The Arbitration Losers squeaked out a Week 24 win of the Gladstone Goatwhisperers, thanks in large part to Troy Tulowitzki.

The third game got off to a good start Monday for the GGs, however, with Cole Hamels getting a win and Jair Jurrjens skipping his Monday start with knee problems. Jurrjens could pitch later this week for the Losers. If not, Jon Garland becomes the emergency starter.

The Pickle Bugs scored another win over the Misfits to claim third-place in the head-to-head with a 2-0 sweep. After winning in the first round, the Misfits dropped four straight head-to-head games.

In the head-to-head consolation, the VC Appraisers scored a win over the Upton No Good, as UNG had a run a three straight 200+ weeks end. But on the strength of those weeks, UNG is a virtual lock to claim one of the two spots in the head-to-head consolation final.

The VC Appraisers can claim the other spot with a win over Chico's Chuggers this week. But even with a loss, VCA can also claim a spot with a solid scoring week.

Teams tied after Round 5 of the round robin will have ties broken with aggregate scoring over the five weeks of the round robin. Heading into Week 25, here are the aggregate totals: UNG 813, VCA 684, Triple-A's 656, Chico's Chuggers 647, Pitch You Blockhead 616.

The overall race still remains very entertaining, with four teams divided by 42 points, through Monday's games.

Here are the standings

1. Upton No Good (Bill-Rich) 4337
2. Pickle Bugs (Jon) 4322
3. Gladstone Goatwhisperers (Arik) 4302

Tuesday's report

The Misfits threw everything they had at trying to rally back into their semifinal series with the Arbitration Losers, sitting their ace Adam Wainwright to get dual starts from J.A. Happ. When Happ threw a shutout, the move looked to work, as the Misfits scored 70 points. But the Losers countered with a 61-point Monday. After Ryan Dempster delivered a -3 outing Tuesday, the Misfits and Losers find themselves tied at 84-84... not where the Misfits had hoped to be.

The other semifinal remains tight. Both the Pickle Bugs and Gladstone Goatwhisperers are off to a quiet start, with the Bugs leading 47-42. The Goatwhisperers are battling injuries. Adam LaRoche, Brandon Phillips and Jay Bruce are all nursing injuries, costing them starts. But the GGs can be thankful that the Bugs didn't start Wandy Rodriguez or Anibal Sanchez this week. Both pitchers delivered shutout outings.

Meanwhile, another stellar outing from Edwin Jackson has powered Upton No Good into the overall lead as August comes to close. While just a few days ago, the top five teams were separated by 15 points. Now, UNG leads the fifth-place Misfits by 102 points. The second-place Losers are 35 points off UNG's overall pace.

Sunday's report

The first game of the semifinal series produced wins for the Gladstone Goatwhisperers and the Arbitration Losers.

The Goatwhisperers got a 19-point win from Cole Hamels, while the Pickle Bugs got a 2-point outing from Ted Lilly. The 17-point difference from those two pitchers were enough to give the GGs a 205-189 victory.

The Bugs came up empty on Sunday, scoring only 7 points. The bad Sunday leaves the Bugs in 16-point deficit, heading into Week 22.

The hole for the Misfits is much greater. Adam Wainwright did not provide the big start that they had hoped, leading to a 201-147 victory for the Losers, a 54-point advantage. That's a ton of ground to recover heading into Week 22.

Upton No Good is wishing they could have scored a few more points in Week 20. After a dismal Week 20, they bounced back with a huge Week 21, giving them a head-to-head win and surging them back into the overall lead.

UNG leads with 3,766 points -- 25 points ahead of the Losers. The Bugs are 26 back. The Goatwhisperers trail by 37 and the Misfits are 98 points back and in risk of losing contact with the other four teams.

Wednesday's report

Game 1 of the semifinals are shaping up to be a couple of tight matchups. Just the way we like it.

The Arbitration Losers and Misfits both had starting pitchers who were handed 10-1 leads and neither came away with a win. Both Jair Jurrjens and Homer Bailey scored 6-point starts despite those huge leads. But the Misfits got a very nice start from Ryan Dempster, while the Losers got a tough loss from Roy Halladay. That left their matchup very tight, with the Losers nursing a 91-87 lead.

Three solid days have given the Pickle Bugs an early 91-82 lead over the Gladstone Goatwhisperers. But the GGs have the upper hand on pitching starts, projected at 4 to the Bugs' 3. And the Bugs have to worry about Billingsley's balky calf.

In the consolation round-robin, Pitch You Blockhead is off to a nice lead, despite taking a hit from Madison Bumgarner. And the Fresh Fish's struggles continue.

Sunday's report

Upton No Good got everything they could have hoped for from Jhoulys Chacin on Sunday. The Rockies pitcher piled up a 22-point outing in a 1-0 win over the Diamondbacks.

But UNG got nothing from anyone else, losing their first-round matchup to the Arbitration Losers 144-128.

The Losers got a solid outing from Jon Garland, and huge day from Omar Infante. In fact, Infante's week (36 points) was almost better than the Losers' other seven hitters combined (38).

In the other matchup, the Pickle Bugs sealed their first-round win with a 243-155 victory over the Triple-A's. The huge week not only sent the Bugs into the head-to-head semifinals, but also into the overall lead.

The Bugs will enter Week 21 with a 20-week total of 3551, followed by the Arbitration Losers 3540, Gladstone Goatwhisperers 3524, Upton No Good 3522 and Misfits 3521.

The Pickle Bugs will face the Goatwhisperers in the semifinals, while the Losers take on the Misfits. Like the first-round, the semifinals will be a Best-of-2 with a two-week aggregate total being the tiebreaker.

Meanwhile, the five-week consolation round-robin begins

Saturday's report

As we head into Sunday, one of the two head-to-head matchups looks to go right down to the wire.

Despite anemic weeks, the Arbitration Losers and Upton No Good will take their series right down to the end. And whoever wins will definitely feel lucky, as they likely will do it with a weekly total that could be south of 150.

The Losers hold a narrow 110-107 lead. With their Game 1 advantage, that translates into a 14-point aggregate lead. The Losers will have Jon Garland pitching against the Brewers, while UNG will pin its hopes on Jhoulys Chacin against the Diamondbacks. UNG got a tough break when Edwin Jackson missed his start this week because of a rainout Friday. But Jason Hammel's 8-point outing as the emergency starter kept UNG close.

The other series is all but wrapped up. The Pickle Bugs lead the Triple-A's 213-142, so it would take a major miracle on Sunday for the Triple-A's to rally. Should they hold on and win, the Bugs would face the Gladstone Goatwhisperers in the semifinals, while the Misfits await the winner of the Losers-UNG.

Chad Billingsley's win Saturday night enabled the Pickle Bugs to take over the overall lead.

Thursday's report

Normally, we would top the blog during head-to-head playoffs with how those matchups are going.

But an unusual twist leads us to start off with the overall race.

The Arbitration Losers and Upton No Good are struggling through poor weeks, meanwhile the Pickle Bugs are having a big week. The combination of those two facts has created a logjam at the top of the overall standings.

Here it is Aug. 20, and the top five teams in the overall standings are separated by just 14 points.

One of these five teams will eventually win the overall championship and one of these five teams will finish out of the money. And the end of the season is a little more than six weeks away.

Also, at least one of these teams will not advance to the head-to-head semifinals. And at this point, it looks as if that will be the Losers or UNG.

As we mentioned, neither team is having a good week. They are having the kind of weeks that would normally kill teams' hopes of advancing in a head-to-head matchup. Luckily for both teams, they are facing each other.

Heading into the weekend, the Losers lead 56-55, but UNG is set for four pitching starts over the weekend (Jimenez, Gallardo, Chacin and EJackson). The losers will get just three starts (Halladay, Jurrjens and Garland).

HEAD-TO-HEAD PLAYOFFS

Misfits 203, Fresh Fish 75; Misfits win series 1-0
Gladstone Goatwhisperers 182, VC Appraisers 160; Goatwhisperers win series 1-0
Pickle Bugs 190, Triple-A's 183; Pickle Bugs lead series 1-0
Arbitration Losers 211, Upton No Good 200; Arbitration Losers lead series 1-0.

For the first time since moving to the head-to-head format, both Nos. 1 and 2 seeded teams advanced to the semifinals without having to play a second game in the series. The Misfits earned the most lopsided victory in FBLG head-to-head history with a 203-75 victory. The week the Fresh Fish had likely ranks as the worst single week that did not fall during the All-Star Break in the FBLG's 18-year history. We know for fact that the best week in league history is 299 points. We don't have an exact number on the previous worse, but we believe it to have been in the 80s somewhere, easily bested by the Fish's anemic 75-point total. Just how bad was it? Well, the Fish's ace (Josh Johnson) put up a -5 outing. Two positions players (Clint Barmes and Seth Smith of the Rockies) posted 0-point weeks. Ryan Braun was the team's star for the week with 14 points. But heading into Friday's game, he had a 0 points for the week.

The Goatwhisperers were not hurt by the fact the Johnny Cueto lost out on a second start last week because of his suspension. The VC Appraisers went into Sunday almost in a dead-heat, but came up empty on Sunday, scoring only 13 points. The GGs scored 39 despite missing out on Cueto and having Tim Lincecum post a two-point outing.

The Misfits and Goatwhisperers get Week 20 off to rest their starters for the semifinals beginning Week 20.

The other two games are still very tight, despite Week 19 wins from the Pickle Bugs and Arbitration Losers.

The Triple-A's and Upton No Good must win in Week 20 to stay alive and they must outscore their opponents by more than what they were outscored by in Week 19.

In other words, UNG needs to beat the Losers by 12 points in Week 20 after losing 211-200 in Week 19. The Triple-A's deficit is just seven points after the Bugs won 190-183.

OVERALL STANDINGS

1. Arbitration Losers (Tim) 3396
Time for Johnny Gomes to take his whopping one-point week to the bench
2. Upton No Good (Bill-Rich) 3394

4. Misfits (Reid) 3351
Really hoping Howard returns from DL in time for semifinals
5. Pickle Bugs (Jon) 3308

Wednesday's report

HEAD-TO-HEAD PLAYOFF SCORES

Misfits 112, Fresh Fish 28
Gladstone Goatwhisperers 72, VC Appraisers 42
Pickle Bugs 79, Triple-A's 71
Upton No Good 78, Arbitration Losers 77

The first round of the head-to-head playoffs is off to roaring start, expect for the Fresh Fish. A negative outing by Strasburg, plus injuries to three hitters have left the Fish in a deep hole. If they can't erase the 84-point deficit over the next four days, the Misfits will advance to the semifinals. The Goatwhisperers, despite some faulty pitching, holds a 30-point edge over the VC Appraisers. But it's not all good news for the GGs. Furcal went on the DL, and Cueto drew a 7-game suspension. However, we don't doubt he'll appeal that, so it may have no immediate impact. The other two games are tight. The Pickle Bugs hold a narrow lead thanks to solid outings from Oswalt and Wandy Rodriguez. The Bugs' rotation sets up nicely for Week 20.  And Upton No Good and the Arbitration Losers are neck-in-neck.

OVERALL STANDINGS

1. Upton No Good (Bill-Rich) 3272
Hoping for more run support from Rockies hitters next time out
2. Arbitration Losers (Tim) 3262

3. Misfits (Reid) 3260

4. Gladstone Goatwhisperers (Arik) 3250

5. Pickle Bugs (Jon) 3197

6. VC Appraisers (Kevin-Dave) 3017

Head-to-head playoffs

A few days, but here's an update on the head-to-head game.

The Misfits took the regular-season head-to-head title with a 13-5 record.

The Gladstone Goatwhisperers and Pickle Bugs tied for second at 11-7, but the Goatwhisperers earn the No. 2 seed based on their better overall standings.

The Arbitration Losers (10-8) take the No. 4 seed, while Upton No Good (9-8-1) is No. 5, and the Triple-A's (8-9-1) are No. 6.

The VC Appraisers (8-10) and Fresh Fish (8-10) tied for seventh, but the Appraisers take the No. 7 seed based on a better overall record.

Pitch You Blockhead and Chico's Chuggers fail to qualify for the head-to-head playoffs. They'll take a two-week head-to-head reprieve before taking part in the consolation round-robin.

So here are the head-to-head playoff matchups

No. 1 Misfits vs. No. 8 Fresh Fish
No. 2 Gladstone Goatwhisperers vs. No. 7 VC Appraisers
No. 3 Pickle Bugs vs. No. 6 Triple-A's
No. 4 Arbitration Losers vs. No. 5 Upton No Good

The top-two seeds receive an advantage in the first round. Both the Misfits and Goatwhisperers only need to win one game in either Week 19 or 20 to advance to the semifinals. The Fresh Fish and VC Appraisers need to win both games to advance.

In the 3-6, 4-5 matchups, the team that wins both games advances. If the two teams split the Week 19 and 20 games, the tiebreaker will be the cumulative point total of Weeks 19 and 20. If that doesn't break the tie, the higher seed advances.
