Week 26 update

A 24-point outing from Marco Estrada and yet another win from Kris Medlen sealed the head-to-head championship for Billy Ashley Wind Generator.

BAWG beat the Misfits 222-186 for the deciding Game 3 victory.

But the competition is not completely over for BAWG and Misfits. The race for second place in the overall standings is still on.

The Misfits hold a four-point edge 4585-4581 with three days left in the season. If the Dodgers and Cardinals tie for the final wild-card spot and need a tiebreaker game, that game is consider a regular-season game and would count toward our titles.

The question for the Misfits is this: With two pitchers throwing on Sunday and two others on Saturday, do they have any more starts coming? However, BAWG had three pitchers throw over the weekend. A fourth, Gio Gonzalez, is not likely to pitch much, if at all, in the season's closing days.

With both teams having exhausted their final moves, these rosters are the ones they'll close the season with. BAWG could get a start from Adam Wainwright, but only if the Cardinals haven't clinched a playoff spot by the final day of the season.

In the week's other game, the Triple-A's easily locked down the consolation championship with a 212-142 win over the Arbitration Losers.

But there is still an interesting battle to avoid the cellar.

Here are the overall standings heading into the final three days of the season.

  1. Fresh Fish (Rick) 4788
  2. Misfits (Reid) 4585
  3. BAWG (Rich-Brian) 4581

Week 25 update

The FBLG season comes down to its final full week.

And the head-to-head championship will come down to a deciding third game as the Misfits rallied with a 209-point week to beat Billy Ashley Wind Generator 209-183.

The Misfits used three double starts to power their big week.

The head-to-head final has double meaning for the Misfits and BAWG as both teams are battling it out for second and third place in the overall standings.

The Misfits hold a 14-point advantage heading into the final full week.

The Rookies sealed up third place in head-to-head with a 171-165 win over the Fresh Fish, who are jogging to the finish after their red-hot season. The Fish still have a comfy 217-point lead for the overall championship. The Rookies have fourth locked down with a 118-point edge over Pitch You Blockhead.

The Arbitration Losers finished the head-to-head consolation round robin with a 5-0 mark. But that won't matter much if the Losers don't win the consolation final this week.

In an odd twist, the three teams tied for second in the round robin at 2-2 last week all lost. That created a five-way tie for second at 2-3. The tiebreaker was total points scored during the five-week round robin. And the Triple-A's, who suffered a Week 21 loss to the Losers despite scoring 213 points, carried that with 914 points to beat out PYB's 878.

So it will be the Losers vs. TA's for the consolation title.

Week 24 update

The first game of the FBLG head-to-head championship went to the red-hot Billy Ashley Wind Generator, who scored a 200-125 win over the Misfits.

BAWG's hot streak is so hot, they actually moved past the Misfits into second place through Week 24.

The Misfits need to get things turned around to win in Week 25 and force a deciding Game 3.

The Fresh Fish continue to limp to the finish line, losing 145-129 to the Rookies in the third-place serie Game 1.

In the consolation round robin, the Arbitration Losers improved to 4-0 to clinch a spot in the consolation final. Hammerin Hank, Halladay Road and Pitch You Blockhead (2-2) are fighting it out for the other spot. Also, the Triple-A's and Pickle Bugs have not been completely eliminated from the mix.

Head-to-head updates

Here's an example of what happens when you take your foot off the accelerator.

The Fish, who were basically unbeatable in April, May and June, proved fallible in July, August and September. They started the head-to-head season 13-1, but finished by losing two of their last four.

After easily advancing to the semifinals and winning the opening game of the semifinals, they dropped back-to-back games to Billy Ashley Wind Generator.

The Fish will win the overall championship. But they will not win the head-to-head championship. The BAWG posted a nice 208-point week to advance to the championship series against the Misfits, who advanced with a 2-0 series win over the Rookies.

The Fish will have to try to settle for third place against the Rookies.

Meanwhile, the Arbitration Losers improve to 3-0 in the consolation round-robin, looking solid to clinch a spot in the consolation final. Hammerin Hank is 2-1, while the other four teams (1-2) face must-win situations this week.

Head-to-head playoff update

The top-seeded Fresh Fish and Misfits posted Game 1 victories in the opening round of the semifinals series. The Fish eeked out a 172-168 win over Billy Ashley Wind Generator, while the Misfits used a big week to beat the Rookies 222-181. BAWG and Rookies must win this week to force a deciding Game 3. If the Fish and Misfits win, the championship series (and third-place series) will begin in Week 23.

The Arbitration Losers, Hammerin Hank and Halladay Road were winners in the first round of the consolation round-robin.

As far as the overall race goes, little has changed. Fresh Fish (3985), Misfits (3736), BAWG (3614) and Rookies (3561) hold onto the money spots. It would take a major charge by the fifth place Pitch You Blockhead (3349) to break up the top 4.

In Week 20, the Misfits avoided the upset by winning 167-153.

The Rookies swept both games against Pitch You Blockhead. And Billy Ashley Wind Generator did the same to Halladay Road.

Week 18 scoring update

The head-to-head regular season is over, and the eight playoff spots have been claimed. Pitch You Blockhead earned the No. 6 seed over Hammerin Hank by virtue of a 74-point advantage in the overall point standings. And the Triple-A's claimed the eighth and final playoff berth by a nine-point overall margin over the Arbitration Losers.

As the top 2 seeds, the Fresh Fish and Misfits simply need to post wins either in Week 19 or Week 20 to advance to the semifinals. As for the matchups between the Rookies-Pitch You Blockhead and BAWG-Halladay Road, it basically becomes a two-week game -- the team the score the most points over the next two weeks advances to the semifinals.

Meanwhile, the Arbitration Losers and Pickle Bugs take a two-week hiatus before re-engaging for the consolation title.

Sunday's report

The FBLG enters the All-Star break with a glimmer of hope for the nine owners in pursuit of the Fresh Fish. The Fish lost Giancarlo Stanton for 4-6 weeks, and they didn't have a dominant pitching week. Still, they posted 186 points on the week and another weekly win, clinching the No. 1 seed to the head-to-head playoffs with a 13-1 record.

With a 343-point overall lead, the Fish can afford to lose steam over the next four weeks. But if Stanton can return by the time the head-to-head playoffs begin, that will make a formidable form even stronger.

Week 13 report

Another week, and the Fresh Fish clinch something else. This week, the Fish basically clinched the No. 1 seed to the head-to-head playoffs. The Fish won to improve to 12-1 and the Misfits, Rookies and Halladay Road all lost, falling to 7-6. The Misfits had the worst of it, scoring a nice week of 213 -- only to lose by 3 points. And the Arbitration Losers, after 12 weeks in the cellar, finally broke into ninth place, thanks to a 92-point week by the Triple-A's.

Sunday's report

Another week, another time we're talking about a record or near-record by the Fresh Fish.

This time, the Fish went out and posted an obscene week of 292 points. The FBLG record for points in a week is 298. If R.A. Dickey had posted a win on Sunday, that might have done it.

Still, the Fish scored more than twice the weekly total of five of the other nine owners in Week 12, including the second-place Misfits. That pushed the Fish's overall lead to 340 points, and more than 700 over the last-place Arbitration Losers.

Oh, and the Fish pushed their head-to-head record to 11-1, clinching a berth in the playoffs.

Thursday's report

It's official. The season is over.

Well, at least the race for the overall FBLG championship. No team in the 20-year history of the FBLG has ever come back from a deficit of 300 points or more to win the league title.

On Wednesday, the Fresh Fish extended their overall lead over second-place Misfits to 324 points.

If the Fish don't win the FBLG overall title, it will be because of an epic collapse. The Fish lead the third-place Rookies by 418 points.

The only question now seems to be if the Fish will break the FBLG record for the most lopsided overall championship.

But, hey, there's still the head-to-head title to play for.

Sunday's report

Now, every team but one has fallen, at one point this season, more than 300 points behind the front-running Fresh Fish. Week 8 scoring summary

The Fresh Fish enjoyed a huge week, which created some separations in the overall standings. The Fish outscored the second-place Misfits by almost 80 points and third-place Halladay Road by a huge 146 points.

And the Fish did basically without a catcher as Miguel Montero missed most of the week with a groin injury, and without an outfielder as Chris Young came off the DL too early.

What they did get was a 45-point week in two huge starts by R.A. Dickey. And a 46-point week from Melky Cabrera.

The Billy Ashley Wind Generator also had a very nice week, which allowed them to jump from eighth place to fourth place.

Meanwhile, the Halladay Road muddled through a 114-point week and are waiting word on the health of namesake Roy Halladay.

Protecting and stealing players on FBLG rosters

Here are players who will be steal-eligible Monday if not protected.

OF Matt Diaz (Rook)
SP AJ Burnett (Rook)
OF Nyger Morgan (HH)
SP Jeremy Guthrie (HH)

One rule that is unique to the FBLG is the one that prevents owners from hoarding talent on their bench.

If an FBLG owner keeps a player on his bench for four consecutive weeks, if he does not activate that player on the fifth week, that player can be stolen off his roster by another FBLG owner.

If an owner has a player stolen off his roster, he will receive a bonus monthly move that can be used as a fourth monthly move for the month.

This often is not a very enticing bonus for some owners. Owners who leave players exposed to be stolen often are not very active on picking up free agents.

Example, there are four players potentially eligible to be stolen on April 30, the first Monday that players can be stolen. Those players are on two FBLG rosters whose owners have burned a combined two April moves.

Protecting players on your roster

If a player has an April 30 steal date (steal dates are noted on FBLG scoring document on Google docs), all the owner needs to do is activate that player for Week 5 (which starts on April 30).

If the player is not activated, then he can be stolen off the roster on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. If a steal-eligible player goes unclaimed by 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, then his steal date is reset to the subsequent Monday, and the process starts over again.

Stealing a player

If you're interested in stealing a player off another roster, send the commissioner an email of your intentions BEFORE the Monday roster move deadline. The notice must also included a potential corresponding roster move, if one is needed.

Example: If Willie Mays is left exposed. Then your bid email should go something like ...

"I would like to place a bid on Willie Mays. If I get him, I will released Duke Snider."

Bids without corresponding roster move will not be accepted.

If a player is left exposed, he will be awarded to the bidding owner with the lowest league standing at the Monday roster deadline.

If there are no bids on a steal-eligible player by the roster deadline, the player will remain steal-eligible for 48ish hours after the roster deadline and will be awarded to any bidding owner on a first-come, first-get basis until 11:59 p.m. Wednesday.

Sunday's report

Wow, I'm not sure there has ever been a worst week by an FBLG team during a full week of games in the 20-year history of the Fantasy Baseball League of the Gods.

The Arbitration Losers had just about everything go wrong in Week 3, and that coming off a Week 4 that wasn't that impressive.

The 72-point week may have been an all-time low. And it leaves the defending FBLG champions more than 200 points in the hole three weeks into the season.

Check out this lineup: 1B Aubrey Huff (.182), 2B Rickie Weeks (.197), SS Jimmy Rollins (.254 -- he's raking!), 3B Ian Stewart (.196), C Geovany Soto (.136 … and he had two errors Sunday. Sweet!), OF Justin Upton (.205 and he missed most of last week with in an injury), OF Jay Bruce (.233), OF Emilio Bonafacio (.298 .. team MVP).

SP Tim Lincecum is in a major funk, and had his start rained out Sunday. That same rainout bumped Johan Santana back to Tuesday. SP Daniel Hudson is on the DL with a sore shoulder.

Pickle Bugs pitcher Wandy Rodriguez had a 20-point day on Sunday. The Losers haven't had a 20-point day as a TEAM in almost TWO WEEKS.

So NO ONE in the FBLG has the right to complain to the commish about their team.

Thursday's report

The Rookies are thinking: "Nine shutout innings should get you a win." (Matt Cain)

The Triple-A's are thinking: "Ten shutout innings should get you a win." (Cliff Lee)

The Fresh Fish and Pitch You Blockhead think their outfielders should stop plowing into the wall (Chris Young and Jon Jay).

Rick is the new closer killer. First he killed off Brian Wilson, then he picked up Joel Hanrahan, who now has a sore hammy. Other closers on waiver wire are running for cover.

And the Misfits' Freddie Freeman is starring in a new movie "Driving Mr. Spaulding" with 28 points in the past three games.

Tuesday's report

It's been rough opening for the defending champion Arbitration Losers. Their No. 1 pick (Tim Lincecum) has struggled out of the game. Their No. 2 pick (Justin Upton) may be headed to the DL. They have not scored more than 18 points in any one day in the past eight days. The player they drafted to play 1B is not yet eligible there. The player they drafted to play 3B is not yet eligible there. Johan Santana had two very good starts but no run support. Then he gets lit up in Atlanta. Perhaps they need to trade for David Murphy, because everything can could go wrong has gone wrong. But, again, it's early.

Conditional DL move

Arbitration Losers conditionally place OF Justin Upton on DL, activated OF Martin Prado

Friday's report

We're predicting a six-point Saturday for first-place Halladay Road. Well, that's the trend this week as they've scored 35-6-43-6-33 this week.

The Rookies were one measly hit away from picking up a 15-point bonus for a perfect game by Matt Cain. Still, his 25-point effort kept the Rookies in third place with a VERY unusual point total. The Rookies actually have more pitching points than batting points (normally team batting points represent two-thirds of their scoring).

Thursday's report

Slow starts often send owners into a panic.

A bad week in July wouldn't cause most owners to make any rash moves. But have a bad first week of the season, and some owners are ready to dump their entire team.

The best advice we can give you is to be patient with players who struggle early, especially players who were all-stars last season.

If you have a player who is struggling, you aren't alone. Here's a list of position players who have score 5 or fewer points so far this season.

Danny Espinosa 5, Justin Upton 5, Marlon Byrd 4, Buster Posey 4, Yonder Alonso 3, Logan Morrison 2, Ike Davis 2, Nick Hundley -1, Neil Walker -1

Tuesday's report

Woohoo! The FBLG is whole now with Rick and Pete settling in on team nicknames. Rick is going back to old favorite "Fresh Fish" while Pete honors an all-time great with "Hammerin' Hank."

Pitch You Blockhead got some pitching to push all 10 owners over the 100-point barrier. And that last-place PYB is leading the first-place Halladay Road in Week 2 head-to-head.

Friday's report

Friday was Opening Day, Part III in the National League.

And it was a big day for the Rookies (Henry). Apparently, the Padres confused Chad Billingsley with Walter Johnson. Billingsley fanned 11 Pads in eight shutout innings, tallying a whopping 24-point day that nearly doubled the Rookies' output.

Yet it was Pete's Yet Unnamed Team that leads the way, thanks to pitching wins from Ian Kennedy and Jamie Garcia leading to a 43-point Friday.

On the other end of the spectrum is Pitch You Blockhead (Scott), whose total team score is nine points few than Chad Billingsley's. The good news is that PYB is playing the Triple-A's in head-to-head, the second lowest-scoring team so far (22 points).

Saturday and Sunday are full-slate days in the NL, so we should really see some good movement in scoring.

Opening day update

Jon was upset that Carlos Marmol blew Ryan Dempster's victory, Henry is wishing Clayton Kershaw would have manned-up and pitched two more innings (Michael Jordan never let the flu stop him) and Tim is wishing the Mets scored their run one inning sooner.

Opening Day was a day for the pitchers, at least for those who stuck around long enough to get the win.

At the end of the day Reid's Misfits lead the way, even though they haven't hit much -- 37 of their 42 points come from three starting pitchers.
